I reckon every surfer with social media will already know the last month in Indo has been cooking.

Not just regular Indo season everyday cooking, but all-time best-ever OMFG cooking! Like the incredible cover shot from Charlie Cullen at Aura Surf Resort on Simeulue, waves that seem too good to be true.

Everybody’s favourite YouTube tube-pig Nathan Florence almost upstaged his brother’s Championship Tour event winning efforts with a series of incredible sessions across the Mentawai in Late May and early June. Both well-known and unknown breaks were on fire and Nathan, Ivan and their local hosts from Bilou Beach Villas and HTs Resort clocked some of the biggest hollowest Indo pits of recent years.

At the same time, the OG Indo jungle swell magnet was rumbling, as Launching Pads into Speedies at G-Land went to the next level.

Bobbys G-Land photographer Donny Lopez gets all the action. The pics in this post display the challenge of big G-land. Surfers need to get a board big enough for a big drop at the Launching Pad but still able to thread the barrels at slab-like Speedies.

One of our favourite stories of recent scores is a bunch of surfers who had to wait from March 2020 until May 2024 to finally do their surf charter. The best thing is these guys were richly rewarded for their patience. This crew of surfers had their 2020 charter postponed when the borders closed, then re-scheduled to 2022, but their boat sank before their trip.  Through all this Perfect Wave Travel never stopped supporting them, doing whatever it takes to get them on a charter they deserved. Finally the boys were ready in 2024 and Perfect Wave got them on the newly renovated Oasis .

Just before the start of the trip Perfect Wave was stoked to call them with an update, better pack some bigger boards because it’s gonna pump!

This low-key bunch of legends didn’t even take a photographer, but a few pics did get taken – and they did score, properly!

Forecast 18 – 25 June 2024

Sumatra and West Indo

Strong SSW groundswell around 6’-8’ @14 Seconds continues from 18th into 19th June across Sumatra, combined with light to moderate SE winds many of the premier breaks of the Mentawai will be cooking. These conditions will favour the west-facing lefts, expect strong sets in the 1.5 to 2 x overhead range at the exposed breaks. However, the South of South West swell angle will limit the amount of swell wrapping into the less exposed breaks facing NW. The winds are expected to remain generally light for this time of the year, even tending slightly North so some of the exposed south-facing breaks could be the go. There was some concern that a Positive Indian Ocean Dipole could form in 2024, however lastest indications suggest its not likely and regular lighter SE winds are expected in Sumatra. That means 2024 looks like a classic season without the winds and sqalls that were a feature in 2023

After the last month of non-stop swells not dropping below 6 feet, the Indian Ocean will take a brief respite, easing to around 4 foot @ 12 seconds from 20th June through til 23rd June when swells ease to background levels whichmeans expect fun-sized head-high plus waves at exposed breaks.

Bali and East Indo

A cut-off low deepening to the SW of Australia is set to build a pulse of SSW swell that is expected to arrive around 21 June in the 6 foot @16 seconds range. As the system is at its strongest due south of Java, we expect that more swell will reach Java and Bali while both East Indo and Sumatra will miss the bulk of this swell. We expect this south swell will drop quickly from 23 June as the storm tracks below the Australian continent. Expect regular ESE trade winds throughout, favouring western-oriented breaks of the Bukit and G-Land.
A stronger trade fetch south of East Indo will develop surprising SE swells around 23-24 June so keep an eye on South and East Exposed breaks before trade winds strengthen through the day.

Forecast 26 June – 1 July 2024

Background swells from multiple directions persist, unfortunately, there is not expected to be any major activity until 28 June when a mid-sized pulse out of SSW is expected across Sumatra in the 6-foot range @ 15 Seconds SSW. This swell will moderate to 1st July when the next pulse is expected to fill in. This swell is generated by a broad strong SW fetch due south of Madagascar. As the fetch is strong in the western side of the swell window, this series of swells will benefit the whole of Indo from the far north West to East Nusa Tenggara. Pencil the first week of July for back-to-back SW swells of increasing size and power as it moves into July.
