The waves were excellent and uncrowded. Easily some of the best sessions I’ve had. The team were exceptional, always going out of their way to get us onto great waves. The food was fantastic, and we were treated like family the whole time. If you want a high-quality surf trip with great hospitality, Puri Asu is hard to beat.

Steve and the crew took care of everything we needed and much much more! From getting and leaving the island, to sailing around to find the best wave, they are so well prepared and organized. The food is amazing and diverse, fresh fish caught the same day and served in many different ways, meat chicken and what not ! Rooms are kept to the highest standard and the entire resort is aesthetic and well kept. We had the times of our lives, can’t wait to be back. Would recommend to a group of friends, families, couples, and basically anyone 🙂

The crew there were awesome! Dom was there for us and nothing was an issue. He ensured that one of the girl babysat Oc?ane and we got to surf pretty much everyday twice a day. The quality of waves is just unbelievable.

Land & Sea Transfers
Land and sea transfers from Binaka Airport, Nias (GNS) to Asu Island are US$100 each way per person.
Transfers include travel from Binaka Airport to Sirombu Harbor, then by boat to Asu Island. Return transfer back to Binaka Airport is also US$100 each way.
Round trip: US$200 per person.
Internet

Getting There
Puri Asu Resort is reached via Medan, North Sumatra, followed by a domestic flight to Nias Island and a combined road and speedboat transfer to Asu Island.
Recommended Travel Timing
- Guests usually arrive via Medan International Airport (KNO), then fly approximately 50 minutes to Binaka Airport, Nias (GNS).
- Guests arriving in Medan before 12:00 PM noon can usually continue directly to Nias and Asu Island the same day.
- Guests arriving in Medan after 12:00 PM noon may need to overnight near Medan Airport and continue to Nias the following morning.
Airport to Resort Transfer
After arrival in Nias, a Puri Asu Resort driver will meet guests at Binaka Airport and drive across Nias Island to Sirombu Harbor.
The road transfer takes approximately 2 hours.
From Sirombu Harbor, guests continue by speedboat to Asu Island. The boat transfer takes approximately 30 minutes.
Guests usually arrive on Asu Island around 10:00–11:00 AM when travelling via the standard morning transfer schedule.
Transfer Cost
Land and sea transfers from Nias Airport to Asu Island are US$200 round trip per person.
This includes the transfer from Binaka Airport, Nias (GNS) to Sirombu Harbor, the speedboat to Asu Island, and the return transfer back to Nias Airport.
Important Note
International flights to Medan, domestic flights to Nias, hotel stays in Medan or Gunungsitoli, and transfers between Medan and Nias are arranged and paid separately by guests unless otherwise confirmed in your package.

Puri Asu Resort is located on a remote island, so it is important to arrive prepared. Please review the notes below before travelling.
What to Bring
Puri Asu is remote, with no access to shops or stores on the island. Guests should arrive prepared and bring personal essentials, including:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months from date of departure
- Tropical climate clothing, swimwear, hat and sunglasses
- Flip flops or thongs
- Indonesian power adapter
- Camera, phone, laptop or tablet chargers
- Personal toiletries and personal medications
- Mosquito repellent
- Sunscreen or sunblock
- Anti-inflammatory tablets and pain killers
- Surfboards, fins and spares, fin keys, leash and spares, leash ties, tropical wax, wax comb, rash guard and reef booties
- Ding repair kit and solar resin
- Surf hat and surf helmet
- Chocolate, sugar snacks or other personal snacks
Cash & Payments
There is no ATM available once guests arrive on Asu Island, so please withdraw enough cash in Medan or Gunungsitoli before travelling onward.
Puri Asu accepts cash payment in Indonesian Rupiah, Euro or USD. Cash is useful for extras such as snacks, bar bill, lobster dinners, laundry, baggage complications, local souvenirs and staff tips.
Please confirm accepted payment methods for final balances before travel.
Equipment Available at the Resort
- Snorkelling equipment is available free of charge for guests.
- Stand up paddle boards are available for guest use.
- Fishing equipment is available for trolling from the boats.
- Guests who prefer their own snorkelling gear, fishing tackle or personal equipment are welcome to bring it.

Is There Fishing?
Fishing is available on request, weather permitting. The resort provides trolling equipment, and guests who want to try casting, jigging or popping are encouraged to bring their own rod and a few midsize lures.
Is There Snorkelling?
Yes. There is good snorkelling directly in front of the resort, and snorkelling equipment is provided free of charge for guests. If the waves are flat, the resort may be able to take guests to additional snorkelling spots in the area upon request.
Should I Bring a First Aid Kit?
Puri Asu has medical supplies and a first aid kit, but guests are strongly encouraged to bring their own basic medical supplies as well. Reef cuts must be cleaned properly and can be prone to infection, so useful items include antiseptic, healing ointment, gauze, tape, Band-Aids and any personal medication. Guests may also wish to bring antibiotics after speaking with their doctor before travel.
What About Malaria?
Puri Asu notes that there have been no malaria cases on Asu Island over the last 10 years. Guests should still avoid mosquito bites by using repellent and suitable clothing coverage.
How Do I Get to the Resort?
Guests arrive at Medan International Airport (KNO), then take a domestic flight of approximately 50 minutes to Binaka Airport, Nias (GNS). A Puri Asu driver meets guests at the airport and drives across Nias Island to Sirombu Harbor. The road transfer takes approximately 2 hours.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?
The main surf season generally runs from March or April through November. July, August and September usually bring bigger swells and offshore winds, while the shoulder months can offer smaller to medium-sized waves and smoother conditions.
What Is the Climate Like Around Asu Island?
Puri Asu Resort is located in a remote and pristine part of the world, 1° north of the equator. The climate is tropical, hot and humid, with rainfall possible throughout the year.
Walking through the island jungle is part of the adventure, with beautiful wildlife, friendly local people, unique plants and lush foliage.
Travel Insurance
Puri Asu Resort is very remote and requires guests to have valid travel insurance, including medical evacuation cover. Please arrange suitable travel insurance before departure.
Puri Asu Surf Resort
Asu Island just off Nias in Northern Sumatra offers quality waves, chilled island vibe and a peaceful surf escape from the big crowds. As a surfer you will love to indulge in the variety of waves on offer that are all in close proximity and can be reached by speed boat within 30 minutes. The accommodation ties in with the island and offers all the modern amenities that you want.
Surfing
Puri Asu Resort sits in the wave-rich area, with a variety of surf breaks accessible by speedboat from the resort. The area offers a mix of lefts and rights, from the long, powerful walls of Asu to nearby waves such as Bawa, Bommie, Sirombu, Afulu, Salonako and a few lesser-known options best left for the local team to reveal when conditions line up. Most breaks are reached within approximately 5 to 50 minutes by boat, giving surfers flexibility depending on swell, wind, tide and ability level. Asu is the headline wave, offering long rippable walls and barrel sections when the swell is on, while other nearby breaks provide options for different conditions, including shorter right-handers, playful walls and more approachable waves for developing surfers.
Activities
Puri Asu Resort offers amazing surf, but that is not all there is to do. (Even though surfing is a huge part of the island and the resort life.) The resort has lots of recreational equipment so that you can partake in stand up paddle boarding, snorkeling, fishing and more. If you want to explore the island, you can get speedboat rides to visit a local village, go snorkeling, and more. Off-shore deep sea fishing charters are available upon request. The resort features a private pier where you will be able to look out over the Indian Ocean.
