Nias Main Break
The perfect right hander at Sorake Bay is bucket list for every surfer. Here you can walk from the doorstep to the “Keyhole” and paddle to the line-up with dry hair. 8-Frame - next to Hiliduha village this is one of the best high-performance waves in the Nias Islands and offers both left and right barrels.
Indicator
Just above Main break of Nias, also goes off on its day, as you can see in the right side from lounge of Keyhole camp. Indicator as “a formidable opponent to your health, safety, and well-being” – and that certainly isn’t far off shallow reef. The wave grinds down a section of reef. At low tide forget it, unless you choose to surf the outside section, which can occasionally offer some alternative on a north west wind. At high tide though and on the right swell, Indicator can offer perhaps some of the thickest, fast and hollowest tubes in the world.
Walo Hiu
A world-class left hander which can produce an epic 5-10 second barrel depending on swell and wind direction. Walo Hiu left is located north of the Keyhole Surf Camp; access to the break requires a 30 minute walk in the jungle or 15 minutes by boat. Left of Walo hiu is a beautiful long left-hand point which peels down the line offering a perfect open workable face for big carving turns or hunt out the inside barrels. for a perfectly shaped peeling left located deep in the Bay of Walo which starts to work on larger swells. You can cruise down the line or hit the lip over and over again.
Asu
Legendary lefthander that runs for 300 yards at hyperspeed and works best in best south winds.
Bawa
Premier deep-water right that is a challenging and powerful wave for chargers and barrel junkies. Big boards needed!
Bombie
60m right hander, best w/ east wind.
Secret Rights
150m right hand reef break, sshhhh…secrets still exist.
The Machine
After the 2005 earthquake, the reef was lifted. They usually hit this spot on the high tide when its big at Point of Nias. Low tide is good but you might get a mouth full of reef. It’s a long tube. and once you come out, it’s an easy paddle back out.
When to go
Traditionally the Indonesian surf season peaks during the Indonesian dry season from May to September, when the south-west swells that the wave works best are most consistent. Word however is slowly seeping out that Nias can produce decent waves almost any time of year. The waves are smaller, so perfect for the inside sections at Lagrundi, and the crowds thin out remarkably.

Nias is amazing fusion of beautiful scenery, captivating culture, and intriguing history. The Hombo Batu, or stone jumping, tradition is a must see as locals recreate the ancient Nias War Dance. Near Lagrundi Bay Bawomataluo with its Nias traditional architecture is a fascinating village and a glimpse into the ancient past.
