If you need any encouragement to book a trip to Kandooma or Maverick Laamu April is looking set to pump with non-stop SE swell.

March 2025 Surf Report

The Southern Atolls have been epic for the last few weeks with stunning weather, glassy conditions and pulsing swells from South West, South and South East. The Gurahali and Island Safari surf-charters have been making the most of the conditions, with guides Martey, Mishu and Liuttey putting them on the spot. Matt Griggs and Taylor Knox are regulars, bringing their group every year for the perfect combination of wide swell window and good winds.

Surf Forecast for April 2025

Surfers headed to the maldives this April are set for a treat, a solid run of SE swell is set to light up the East facing breaks across the entire Maldives.  With great weather, light and variable winds from West to North and often glassy there is great potential for some good to epic sessions to go down!

It all starts as a strong ESE trade wind field setting up off the West Australian coast, even better a tropical cyclone embedded, supercharging a long fetch aimed directly at the Maldives’ south- and east-facing breaks.

At this stage, we’re looking at an extended run of swell beginning on 31st March 2025 and extending into mid-April, possibly beyond. The Swellnet surface winds from late March indicate where it’s coming from—and with such a long fetch, expect consistent swells.

A broad fetch of SE winds is setting in in the Indian Ocean, note cyclone embetted. Marked up WAM from Swellnet

Forecast Highlights

31 March, 2025 Swell building from SE (135°), strong 13 seconds period, increasing from 2′ to 3’+ through the day

April 1, 20253’–4’ SE swell (140°) at 11-12 seconds, with light north winds trending to glassy conditions.

Overhead sets at Tucky Joes,  Kandooma and all breaks across the North & South Male Atolls.

In the Central Atolls, F1’s, Machines, Sarongs and Yin Yangs should be firing.

In the Far South, expect Tiger Stripes and Love Charms to light up.

This swell will likely peak on April 2nd, but won’t fade much. From April 4th onward, expect head-high pulses, gradually easing and trending more SSE by April 7th.

A renewed pulse of energy from the SE is expected to fill in from the 8th April (3′-4′ @10s 160°) as winds are expected to trend westerly, this is great at the East facing rights like Kandooma and Machines.

We are also seeing powerful round of SW groundswell set to impact from 9th April, this could bring long period energu (>20 seconds) to the South and West exposed breaks like Vodi and Mauroofs

April is looking good, really good!

ENQUIRE NOW

April 2025 continues to pump with the first SE swell of the season delivering at the start of the month

The forecast is looking good for next few weeks

10 April – SSE Swell building to 4’ @ 10 seconds with moderate wind from WSW. This will favour the east-facing rights like Kandooma (South male), Machines and Sarongs (Laamu) and Blue Bowls (Gaaf Dhaalu). Expect head high and very fun, The lefts are likely to be wind-affected and cross offshore

11-12 April – SSE Swell holding 3’-4’ range @11 seconds with moderate WSW winds, East facing rights like Sultans, Jails, Kandoomam F1s, machines will be good. Building SSW groundswell up to 3’-4’ @ 16 seconds will mean a few strong sets at breaks with exposure to south eg: Cokes, Yin Yangs, Blue Bowls

13-15 April – SSE trade swell eases slightly, 2’3’ @ 9 seconds with winds trending WNW. At the same time SSW groundswell will pulse with overlapping swell trains from 2’ – 4’ at 14 – 18 seconds. Breaks with exposure to South could be very good. Likely to favour the lefts (Chickens, Tucky Joes etc.) while the East-facing rights will ease to small but fun.

16 – 19 April SSE trade holds, 2’3’ @ 9 seconds with potential for building up to 4’ as a strong fetch establishes south of Indonesia. Local Maldives winds trending light to moderate W. The SSW groundswell will ease to background levels with swell trains from 1’ – 3’ at 13 – 18 seconds. Mix of swells and lighter winds will favour swell magnets like Riptides while regular breaks like Kandooma remain small but surfable

20 – 22 April. SSE trade swell holding 2’ – 3’ @ 10 seconds while SSW groundswells pulse in background 2’-4’ @ 16 seconds. Winds tending light and variable so all breaks with a combination of swells could be very fun.

21-24 April. Watch out for a potential SE Cyclone swell building from 21st as a cyclone interacts with a strong high-pressure west of the Australian continent intensifying the SE fetch pointing back towards the Maldives.
