After an ok start to the month, the last weeks of May 2024 in the Maldives were unforgettable, unfortunately for some it was for the wrong reasons. A sustained period of gales and storms covering much of the region for over a week, limiting the opportunities for surfing. At times, the storms restricted the movement of the boats, requiring them to remain at safe anchorages. Despite all this, surfers still found some waves and good times ensued
At Kandooma, the Music In Paradise event with Delta Goodrem was making memories and all participants were buzzing. Layne Beachley and friends were out on the Carpe Diem searching for waves across the Central Atolls. The bad run of weather limited the surfing but they were able to find a few good sessions and find a little bit of that Maldives magic.
Around the end of May the weather across the Maldives slowly eased, the strong westerlies eased and even turned slightly NW, opening up more surfing options.
Ace Buchan and family took up residence in Kandooma in time for some epic family-friendly surf conditions at Riptides, The Sandbar, and Kandooma Right. Of course, Ace worked with the Kandooma surf guide team to find the best waves and scored many memorable sessions across both North and South Male Atolls. The new Perfect Wave Dhoni at Kandooma served as the ultimate boat to chase waves, the speed and space opening up lot more opportunities for Kandooma surfers.

As the month of June has progressed, the steady improvement in both weather and swell has continued, setting up some good to great sessions especially across the breaks open to to South and South West swells.

Forecast 18 -25 June 2024
Mid-range South South East trade swells continue in the 3 – 4 foot at 10-second range under light to moderate West South West winds. This is a good combination for the east-facing right-handers like Kandooma. Machines, F1’s etc. Expect head-high plus and classy fun waves at these breaks for days. The SSE trade swells ease slightly around the 20th to the 2-3 foot range, before strengthening again into the 3 – 4 feet at 10 seconds SSE from 22nd June onwards til 25th June while winds remain from WSW – fun times!
Forecast 26 -30 June 2024
Moving into peak swell season, the SSE swells produced from trade wind belt south of the equator and West of the Australian continent will strengthen – creating a broader fetch and more of that classic SE trade swells that we all know and love.
Building from the 26th June, the SE swells are expected to lift from the 4-foot range to 5 – 6 foot at 11 seconds from the SSE. Originating from a broad and strong fetch as a high pressure is squeezed by mid-latitude lows south of Indonesia, these tradeswells can be expected to pulse over an extended period resulting in fun to mid-sized waves at East and South facing breaks all the way into July and beyond.
Local winds across Male Atolls are expected to remain light to moderate WSW, the combination with SSE swell will favour the East facing rights like Kandooma Right, Sultans and Jails around Male, Machines, and F1s in the Centrals. Indications suggest lighter winds from 30 June so it could open up some glassy sessions across all the breaks. Early indications are for strong pulse out of the SSE – SE building from 3rd July onwards, it is expected to be more than regular tradeswell as a low pushing up to the West of Australia is squeezed against the large high embedded in the central Indian Ocean.
