A must-stay for surfers and non-surfers alike.
If you’re looking to connect with nature and have a real wellness experience, this is the spot!
We absolutely loved our stay at Te Whaanga Retreat.
It’s a beautiful, peaceful spot perched above the coast, looking west over the Pacific in the laid-back surf town of Raglan, about a two-hour drive from Auckland, and well worth it.
One of the most beautiful places I've ever had the pleasure of staying.
From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth and treated to 5-star facilities that exceeded every expectation. Our four-course dinner was absolutely sublime – the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion with my family. Dining in such a breathtaking setting felt like a true privilege.
Surfing Highlights

Indicators
A difficult paddle on a big day, best done from the relative safety of Whale Bay or the headland to the east of it. Indicators is the main break but depending on the size of the swell, another 3 spots can be found along this inlet.

Manu Bay
Manu Bay is a medium length left hander that ramps along a rocky point, on proper swells can barrel on the inside and roll in to a long wall. On smaller swells a nice longboarding wave.
Whale Bay
Whale Bay is one of Raglan’s classic left-hand point breaks, sitting between Manu Bay and Indicators. It is generally considered the softer of the main Raglan points, with a long left breaking over rock and boulder reef. On the right swell, it offers long walls and linking sections, but surfers should still treat it as a proper reef/point setup rather than a beginner wave.
Ngarunui Beach
Ngarunui Beach is Raglan’s main beach break and the most approachable option for beginners and surf lessons. It offers left and right peaks over sand, with plenty of room compared to the point breaks. Conditions vary with swell, wind and banks, but it is the best local option for someone looking for a more forgiving session.
Outsides
Outsides is part of Raglan’s more advanced point-break setup beyond Whale Bay and Indicators. It is a less casual option, generally suited to experienced surfers when the swell and conditions line up.
