Region Information

Mexico

The ultimate surf adventure!  The Pacific Coast of Mexico, from the arid north to the tropical south, has some amazing waves; powerful, consistent and you’ll always find relatively uncrowded surf somewhere.    The potential is huge, you can surf all year around and it’s rarely flat for long but the best season for waves is from June to September.  Mayan Ruins, picturesque villages, heavy beach breaks, perfect point breats - so much to see and so many different waves for all kinds of surfers searching for perfect waves and adventure.  It’s a colourful country, bursting with culture and history.

The Mexican Favorite

Puerto Escondido is the spot that put Mexico on the surfing map!  Known as ‘Mexican Pipeline’, this is a heavy beachbreak, not for the faint-hearted when it’s big!  it’s at its biggest and best between May and July.

Barra de la Cruz is where the Rip Curl Pro Search was held in 2006.  This Oaxacan right-hand point break gets consistently good swells from March to October, although it’s at its best in June and July.

Troncones was a former fishing village and is now a cool, artsy hangout for surfers.  It’s located near Zihuatenejo in the state of Guerrero and has fun waves all along this stretch of coastline.  All sorts of waves for all sorts of surfer here.

Where to Stay

Boutique Hotel on the beach: Hacienda Eden is a classic Mexican hideaway not far from Zihuatenejo airport.  Very friendly staff and a great ambiance.

For ocean loving surfers: Enjoy a bit of luxury at the Scorpion Bay Surfing Club.

Surf Guesthouse: Hook up with Oaxaca Surfing Adventures and find the best waves in the area and stay in a typical Mexican Hacienda.

Go Exploring

If you have to stopover in Mexico City, climb up the ancient Aztec pyramids of the moon and the sun.  Visit the local market and taste real Mexican food and experience the laid back way of life of this very colourful country!

The southern ocean generates low pressure systems and along with the more localised tropical storms waves can be found all year round along the Pacific coast of Mexico.  The wet season runs from around May to September and there’s little rain throughout the rest of the year.  June until October is hurricane season so although the waves will be firing, be aware that you are heading to an area prone to hurricanes.  Water is warm all year around in Mexico, early mornings it’s nice to have a wetsuit top but its pretty much boardshorts all the way as soon as you step off the plane!

Mexico

  • Puerto Escondido - Crank up the Marley and cruise to the beach. Puerto is just right for chillin' at a no-frills tourist town that refused to go 'resort.'
  • Sayulita, Nayarit - Good waves, a large surf community, and frequent surf contests, catch the north swell December through early April.
  • Pascuales, Colima - Huge beach break - very powerful - for experienced surfers only.
  • Mazatlan, Sinaloa - Excellent conditions year round from beginner to expert. Check out Playa Bruja, Playa Olas Altas, Cerritos Beach, Cagadazo Beach, and Playa Los Pinos.
  • Todos Santos, Baja California Sur - Good surf spots between Los Cabos and Todos Santos
  • Ensenada, Baja California - good surfing in Santo Tomas north of town. Camping available. Best time is autumn and winter - take a wetsuit.
  • Huatulco, Oaxaca - La Bocana beach, Barra de la Cruz, 20 km east is great. Summer and autumn are the best.
  • Punta de Mita, Nayarit - Good waves off the beach near the end of the point in Banderas Bay
  • San Pancho, Nayarit - Small waves here, better in Sayulita (10 minutes by car). A good place to stay is Costa Azul. They have daily minivan trips to surrounding surf areas.
  • Los Cabos, Baja California Sur - Surf spots mainly outside the resort, on the Pacific near Todos Santos for example
  • San Blas, Nayarit - Las Islitas was once famous for the longest wave in the world - now a good jetty and shore break at Borrego Beach. Best surf is in the summer. Surfers hang out at Pompis Ramada on Borrego.
