Surfing

We’ve compiled a brief Top-5 list of the best places for competent or even average surfers to get wet if you have never been to Hawaii before.

Always remember respect is a crucial element of the Hawaiian surfing experience; and with reason – the islands waves pack punch; ocean conditions here are obviously step up from your local beach break. The local surfers, too, deserve and demand respect.

1. Ehukai Beach Park

Right in front of the parking lot of the same name, are several shifting peaks that work on everything from a west to a windswell wrap from the east. It’s basically sand bottom beach break scattered with random fingers of rock.  Beach Park is generally a good place to start if you are beyond a beginner, but still getting used to things.

Pipeline is immediately to the left of Beach Park.  When the swell is bigger than 6-7ft, it essentially swallows all the peaks of the beach park and the beachy starts closing out.

2. Rocky Point

Rocky Point is a relatively mellow reef break swell magnet that offers both lefts and rights. It is a full performance wave that offers up the odd hollow section and plenty rippable walls. On 2 to 6ft days it is punchy and fun as. Any bigger and it starts to section/close out. It is not too shallow, but shallow enough to knock you around when it gets solid.

3. Laniakea

On a big north swell, Lani’s is a freight train right that can connect for an extremely long, fast ride, with four or five makeable sections. Good news is though it is a deep water wave, but still barrels on the right conditions. Very consistent with any swell that has a bit of north in it; doesn’t work at all on pure west swells.

Good place if you’re looking to blend in – the “town” crowd from Honolulu loves this wave, and thus there are always different faces in the water. There is a shorter, hollow left as well, that can be very fun.

4. Pupukea

Pupukea is a softer right-hander that can have its moments. Generally best in the 4 to 6 ft range it is a relatively deep water wave that offers walls and the odd high barrel. Its gorgeous turquoise waters are also famous for turtles.

5. Sunset Beach

Despite its reputation as a global big wave icon, Sunset Beach is also a highly rippable and accessible surf spot for intermediate to competent surfers. At 4 to 6ft it packs some punch and power, but is no means death, as it is not so shallow. The shifty nature of the take off zone tends to spread the crowds and it isn’t often that packed on midsized days. Once it moves into the 6 to 8ft plus zone it gets very competitive.

The service provided by The Perfect Wave was above and beyond. We booked a trip very late and they were able to organise everything in such a short period of time. The constant check ups and service has convinced me to plan the rest of my surfing trips through the Perfect Wave.

Turtle bay is in a WONDERFUL location, it really doesn't get any better. All rooms are ocean view - on one side you have a view of a calm bay and the other, a view of the surf that is the North Shore. We loved this destination for our extended family. The rooms were large and clean and overall, the food was very good.
