If you are a raving fan of The Perfect Wave you already know that Sri Lanka is a wonderful place full of culture and quality waves for single travellers, couples and families looking for an entertaining, yet relaxing surf holiday experience. Thanks to our new partnership with Cantaloupe Hotels and their AQUA and LEVELS locations, which are redefining the renowned Sri Lankan hospitality and culture with an infallible combination of consideration, warmth and authenticity, it’s now all that and more.
Nadeem Rajabdeen, the Director of the Cantaloupe Hotels Group sums it up well: “The southern coast of Sri Lanka is a beautiful oasis of peace and tranquillity with its own multicultural character and colonial charm. For travellers looking for an unspoiled tropical surfing destination that offers beautiful beaches, incredible nature and plenty of adventure, Sri Lanka is the perfect choice.”
The surf season in the southwest of Sri Lanka starts kicking into gear in November and serves up fun waves for all levels until the end of April. Both LEVELS and AQUA offers great views of the waves, boards to rent and surf instructors for those just learning to surf. The local guides will be happy to take guests to nearby spots in Galle and Weligama, or further south to Ahangama, Midigama and Mirissa to sample some of the best breaks in Sri Lanka like Lazy Left, Plantation Point, Coconut Point and Midigama Right.
When you’re not in the surf or lounging around the pool, there are plenty of other entertaining activities. For a bit of culture visit the Galle Fort, the National Museum, Maritime Museum and Japanese Peace Pagoda. Discover the natural beauty of Sri Lanka on a private tour of the coast by sailboat, spy on elephants, deer, wild boar and buffalo at the Uda Walawe National park, or take a river boat ride on the Madu Ganga to see the amazing diversity of bird species and even a crocodile or two. It’s a bit like a Tarzan movie just based on a boat. Or just grab a bike and cruise the coast to check out the traditional Sri Lankan stilt fishermen.
Both of the hip, boutique Cantaloupe Hotels are located close to the city of Galle with its historic fort and fortified old town built in the 16th century by the Portuguese.
The intimate and luxurious LEVELS fits all styles and tastes with its modern lounge-style décor. It sits on a rocky hill between Galle Harbor and Unawatuna Beach in the middle of the Rumassala nature sanctuary with a panoramic view of Galle Fort and the Indian Ocean. There is a tri-colour pool fronted by the Clique Bed Lounge & Bar for a little rest and relaxation after lunch or a swim. Of course, there are daily yoga classes and a deluxe spa. The hotel is surrounded by a bright green forest, home to many rare plants and medicinal herbs. It’s a short walk from the Japanese Peace Pagoda and a fantastic place to for swimming and snorkelling, the beautiful, isolated Jungle Beach.
There are three types of rooms at Cantaloupe LEVELS, each more satisfying than the next with all the modern comforts you’d expect, including air-conditioning, king-sized beds, Jacuzzi tubs-for-two and extra-large flat screen TVs. The Superior Silhouettes on the ground and second floors are the most intimate, but extremely chic and comfortable.
There are five Deluxe Silhouette suites spread out over the three floors of the hotel, in a similar style to the Superior rooms, but with more area for après-surf lounging and more stunning ocean views.
Last but not least are the Suite Dreams, two design-orientated suites that indulge guests with an exceptional living space, luxurious amenities, infinite ocean views and unrivalled panoramas of the enigmatic sand-swathed coastline, the lush hillside of Rumassala, the island’s misty interior and the lighthouse-spiked silhouette of Galle Fort in all their glory.
When evening rolls around dine under the stars with a special, roof top table or at Jungle Beach, while enjoying one of LEVEL’s Japanese specialties, a juicy steak or fusion paella. Otherwise, eat in at The Cuisine, which serves the best Asian cuisine in Galle.
From Unawatuna Beach you drive south along Sri Lanka’s scenic coastline until you reach Talpe, a sleepy village with a charming aesthetic of secluded, coconut tree lined beaches, which make a magnificent setting for sunbathing and enjoying the breath-taking sunsets. This is where you’ll find the contemporary spaces and calm, relaxing ambiance of AQUA, the ultimate oceanfront getaway.
Of the 15 stylish, individually decorated rooms, 13 have stunning views of the beach through floor-to-ceiling glass windows and from the private furnished balconies. There are also two contemporary suites, which come with a host of added luxuries including private Jacuzzis.
AQUA is also home to Coconut – a fusion restaurant promoting innovative Sri Lankan and Thai cuisine – and the famous Playground Beach Bar, with its inspiring cocktail menu and diverse wine list.
AQUA caters to guests in search of a calm oasis. Kids love the marine infinity pool and snorkelling out front or in the turquoise tinted water of the beautiful lagoon just a short stroll from the hotel. Adults enjoy the personalised spa treatments, before unwinding in the retreat room, or taking in the spectacular view of the ocean from the comfort of a sumptuous lounge chair on the beachfront terrace.
Be it at LEVELS or AQUA, your warm and welcoming hosts are there to make sure that your Sri Lanka experience is one you’ll remember for a lifetime.
