How was the surf in New Zealand in the past few weeks?

We hope you had an a great last couple of months getting in the water as much as you could have at your local surf spots. We have had a mixed spring over here in New Zealand with huge swells punishing the North and South Island’s West Coast lighting up some of our classic long left hand point breaks. 

In the last week the East Coast has been pulsing with a number of sneaky little swells popping up at some of our favourite waves. According to surf forecasters the current weather pattern is supposed to hold till the end of April so fingers crossed we will be seeing consistent East Coast and smaller more favourable winds on the West Coast. Perfect for staying at our surf retreat- Piha Eco Sanctuary.

The summer in NZ is proving to be a hot one with beautiful weather and  warmer ocean currents. Many people in the North Island have been swapping out there winter 3/2 wetsuit for either a short arm or boardshorts. The North Island has been receiving big east swells opening up numerous lesser known spots in isolated regions, perfect for adventures: camping on the beach, fires and of course epic seafood gathering. The majority of these isolated unknown spots came to life our most recent adventure, we stumbled upon some amazing waves with only three of us out. Many of the waves however require a short hike across private land or driving down a long dirt road however the payoff is ten-fold. It’s well worth having a surf guide in these circumstances as you and your mates are surfing world class waves all to yourself.

The fishing in the upcoming summer months will also be amazing with many species coming in closer to shore so there’s always a lot of fish around.
