Four Seasons Maldives
My wife and I spent 9 nights at this resort where we went to celebrate ‘life’. We have stayed at @10 different Four Seasons resorts in the past 3 years and I can confidently state that this particular resort was the best one that we have visited, hands down. Our rationale for this feeling is based on the following:1) Staff: Every single staff, from buggy driver to boat captain, went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that our needs were being met and we were satisfied. Moreover, the thoughtfulness of their actions in the event of a ‘hiccup’ (i.e., the wind knocking over your half-filled glass of juice is swiftly replaced with a new juice, the area is swiftly cleaned and complementary laundry service is offered if you feel that you may have spilled some juice on your clothing) is incredible and consistently displayed by ALL staff.2) Rooms: We stayed in one of the sunset cabanas and in true Four Seasons style, the rooms were beautifully decorated, the furniture and linens were top-notch and the bathrooms were incredible (great water pressure out of the shower, a beautiful soaking tub). The floor plans were also very thoughtful and practical. The outdoor patio was so inviting that we ate 3 meals there and enjoyed the sunset.3) Activities: We surfed most days with the TropicSurf group that was affiliated with the resort. The instruction provided by the South African couple (their names escape me at the moment) and by Alex was fantastic and both my wife and I saw progression in our surfing as a result of this instruction. We were challenged every day and were able to surf a variety of different breaks. The kayaking and stand-up paddling available at the resort was also great: excellent equipment, excellent support and supervision and great beaches. The snorkelling sets were fantastic and we had our goggles cleansed daily to eliminate fog, so we could enjoy the beautiful fish that we saw both on the resort and on daily excursions.4) Restaurants: Not a single thing that we ate was ‘mediocore’ and we ate some of the best meals in our lives there. The buffet, theme nights (lobster night!), room service and canape at the bar/lounge were all incredible and compelmented an already outstanding set of menus. The service and attention at each of the restaurants was also top-notch. On one evening, the Indian restaurant was not too busy and we were offered the private seating area (the roofed area over the ocean, which is normally reserved in advance at a cost) complimentary, simply because it was available and ‘we need somebody to enjoy it tonight!’5) Spa: WOW. We went to the spa almost every day and had a host of treatments. The lunar ritual was incredible and the highlight of our treatments. The attendants were skilled and professional, and the products used were amazing. The only thing that I would add to the spa would be a steam room, as the steam room/showers in the changing areas were too cramped to enjoy. An example of amazing couples steam rooms is found at the 4S in Malaysia (Langkawi). But that is just me being picky!6) Other The ‘je ne sais quoi’ aspects were there in abundace: from Marina’s thoughtful advice as our ‘experience assistant’ to incredible stories shared by the captain on our private sunset dolphin cruise, we were continually impressed. The only thing that I would recommend for improvement is that the resort put more energy into advertising their ‘special events’. While we were there, one of the best Surf Photographers in the world had an art exhibit on display, and one of the evenings he gave a talk. Unfortunately, because the resort barely advertised this (especially when compared with how visible they advertised their meal theme nights, like ‘lobster night’), only 4 people showed up to his talk which was very interesting and complemented by some amazing art. However, this is analagous to pointing out a few strands of hair that are not perfect on a supermodel, but at the end of the day, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND this resort to anyone who is looking to spend some romantic time in a beautiful destination with plenty to do!
Surfing Highlights
Sultans
Located on an uninhabited island on the eastern reef of North Malé Atoll, this is one of the most consistent waves of Malé Atoll, and never closes out, even on the biggest swells. The takeoff is a steep outside peak called Phantoms, which slingshots into a very long, walled, super-fast section called the Pinnacles. All three sections can be thrilling tubes. Rides up to 140m.
Honkeys
One of the most consistent waves of North Male Atoll off the island of Thanburudhoo which is uninhabited. This is an excellent, long, world-class left-hander. Its mirror, Sultans, breaks on the other side of the island.
Cokes
Also at the eastern reef of North Male Atoll, this wave is a short but intense ride that is perfect for barrels with a steep barelling take off, then a very shallow inside section that opens up even more than the takeoff.
Chickens
Eastern reef of North Male Atoll. This long, excellent left-hander has two sections with an enjoyable, thin, peeling, racing lip. Best winds are NW-NNE (offshore). It was named because of the poultry farm on the island and is only accessed by boat.

High density of quality waves. April and October are when the best south swells and prevailing west or southwest winds light up most of the quality breaks in the atolls. North Male Atoll is great for beginners and learners, as much as it is suitable for experienced surfers. Adopt an entire ocean lifestyle at their surf school and learn in the pristine lagoon with courses for guests aged six and older, or let loose on six uncrowded quality breaks within a stone’s throw. Enjoy easy take-offs and longrides in some of the world’s most consistent and warmest swells. Then head to the Surf Shack to store your board, watch the latest surf movie or just hang out.
