The East Coast’s surf hub is centred around the legendary point break of Arugam Bay, which is best in the Southern Hemisphere winter. The opposite coast, and its best waves near the town of Hikkaduwa, light up from November to April. The great surf is accessorised by fertile wetlands, mysterious forests, mountains, rivers, wildlife and cascading waterfalls. Add the inspiring food, historical and religious sites and a culture rich in tradition and Sri Lanka becomes less of a surf trip and more of an awakening.

Sri Lanka is great for beginner and intermediate surfers, with reefs for the experienced.
Beginners: Hikkaduwa’s beach break at the south end, and the user-friendly beach breaks inside Unawatuna Bay.
Experienced: the Coconut Point A-frame, Midigama Right and Unawatuna’s powerful right-hand reef.
Arugam Bay area: Main Point, a long sand-bottom right at its best at 3-4ft; Okanda, a fun walled-up wave; and hollow, fickle Pottuvil Point.

Around Hikkaduwa, Roman Beach and Suite Lanka sit right on the water; further south, The Six, Cape Weligama, Parangi Weligama Bay and Mosvold Villa are near Weligama, Midigama and Ahangama. On the east coast, Jetwing Surf is a two-minute stroll from Pottuvil Point near Arugam Bay.

Yes. Sri Lanka is great for beginner and intermediate surfers: Hikkaduwa has a beach break for beginners at its south end, and Unawatuna Bay has user-friendly beach breaks. Reefs like Coconut Point, Midigama Right and Unawatuna’s right-hander suit experienced surfers.

Sri Lanka has two seasons. From November to April the south-west coast, with Hikkaduwa, is the place to surf; from May to October the best waves are on the east coast at Arugam Bay. Choose your coast to match your dates.
