Maldives surf resorts and surf charters
Reef passes with long, peeling lefts and rights across four surf regions, from resorts with a wave out front to charters that follow the swell.
The Malé Atolls of the Maldives remains the original, and some say best, wave haven in this remarkable surfing destination. The surf breaks including Chicken’s, Cokes and Lohis offer a mix of powerful perfection and fun, peeling waves, all within a short boat ride of the capital Malé. Further south Kandooma Right and Foxy’s are just two of the world class waves in this magical part of the Indian Ocean. Add the marine life, diving, the outstanding resort accommodation and the lux boat trip options and it’s no wonder this speck of beautiful atolls remains a gold standard surf trip.
The Central Atolls of Meemu, Dhaalu, Thaa and Laamu are more remote extending south of the capital Malé and offer the chance to spread out and find waves.
In the far south, Gaafu Dhaalu (Huvadhoo) has remote, uncrowded reef passes, best surfed from February to April and September to October, with March prime.

Yes, in the right spots. South Malé Atoll is great for beginners and learners: Kandooma has a learn-to-surf break and sandbank lessons, and slow waves such as Ninjas (North Malé) and the outside section at Quarters (South Malé) suit longboards. Heavier waves such as Beacons, Cokes and Tucky Joes are for experienced surfers.
Fly into Velana International Airport in Malé (MLE), which has direct flights from Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Paris, London and Hong Kong. Malé Atoll resorts and surf charters are a short boat transfer away; the Central, Southern and Northern Atolls are reached by domestic flight, seaplane or boat.
Yes, within limits. Boards can be a maximum of 7 ft including the bag (6.5 ft is easier), and a full bag of 3 to 5 boards is extremely difficult to fit on a seaplane. Let us know at booking, or no later than 2 months before travel, how many boards you have and the exact dimensions of your packed board bag.
It depends on where and when you go. Some resorts strictly limit surfer numbers, including Kandooma and Maverick, the shoulder months can mean fewer crowds. The Southern Atolls are remote and uncrowded, and the Northern Atolls are largely unexplored.
