Excellent Fiji Surf Trip with Perfect Wave
I recently travelled to the Coral Coast in Fiji to stay at Matanivusi Resort for a surf trip with my daughter and decided to use the services of Perfect Wave Travel. From the initial enquiry to the courtesy follow up upon our return, Perfect Wave were absolutely amazing. Super efficient, courteous, punctual, friendly and professional. Travel can be daunting, especially when navigating the logistics of accommodation, transfers and surf guidance. Lachy and Jamie went out of their way to ensure an absolutely seamless experience. One of the best surf/travel experiences I have had (and there’s been a lot!). I will be hitting up Perfect Wave for the next trip and highly recommend anyone to do the same.
Great trip
Perfect wave was very helpful in arranging all travel and providing destination information.
The staff and the experiences we all had were amazing.
Definitely a destination to recommend and enjoy some quality bonding time with our young passionate teenage surfers.
Great trip!
Lachlan McKay made the whole process such a breeze. He was a wealth of knowledge and really listened to what we wanted out the trip and steered us in the right direction. His expertise, patience, and guidance were such an asset and make the whole process a joy and we couldn’t be more stoked on our trip. Matanivusi resort in FIJI was the perfect place to stay. It was mellow, the staff were so accommodating, and just loved every minute of it.
Wow! Matanivusi was amazing, relaxing and just what I needed.
Thank you so much for recommending this resort, I don’t even know were to start with feedback.
So I’ll start with food. The chefs were always prepping and cooking making sure food was ready, on time and meeting everyones needs. The food itself was so rich with flavour and made around the fresh produce available from the veggie garden out the back. I never went to bed hungry. My absolute compliments to the chefs!
The resort local staff were very friendly, helpful and always encouraging me to relax by embarrassing the ‘Fiji Time’ vibe. They were smiling even when it was raining and the ‘Fiji cold’ weather kicked in. I highly recommend Villi’s cocktails with the standout being a Pina colada and the Margarita! Villi was a great host at the main house, always happy to organise things and share some local knowledge.
The surf was perfect for surfers with a little more experience than myself, however I still managed to get out there and have fun. The local surf guides, both Syva and Syni (I think that’s how you spell their names) were very patient, kind and encouraging when I was out on the reef ’surfing.’ I would definitely recommend bringing my own board next time, even if its a softtech board as the boards available were limited.
The surf guides included both local and Aussie guides, Ryse and his wife Meret were fantastic and helped planning my surf trips while managing the needs of the other more experienced surfers. A huge shout out to Meret, she is a great yoga instructor and made classes available around surf program and other plans I had made throughout my stay. I pretty much did a class everyday and felt like the yoga classes helped me to unwind even more.
The Aquatrek Dive with the Sharks at the ‘Bistro’ dive site is a must do for those who like diving (and comfortable with sharks), it helped that the resort staff knew the dive masters running the dives because I was looked after and given a heads up on what to expect on the dives beforehand.
The resort itself was just beautiful! Even though it was raining and surprisingly cold, the isolation and tranquility of the resort is so peaceful. Having no wifi was great, and forced me to read every night and sleep well (apart from waking up from the dropping coconuts). The bunja tree near the yoga studio was stunning and to be honest I could go on about the natural beauty of the resort but words don’t justify it.
Last but not least, Donna and Brian were fantastic and so welcoming. We had a few issues with the power and water across the entire resort but they communicated regularly and I was always informed of any updates as the repairs occurred. They have a wonderful story and a stunning resort. I will definitely be back.
Thank you again, and I will definitely be giving you a call again to organise my next surf trip. You have been so professional and patient with my delayed email response. I have already recommended you to many of my navy friends who like to surf and travel (Because who doesn’t)!
Great input from Charlie on the resort and what to expect.
Charlie also was able to speak to the resort to confirm our standard of surfing was acceptable. He was also very accessible throughout the process (including after we booked). Booking process was efficient, guidance on what to bring was helpful as was the layout of the itenary (published in Vamoos). Great service all round.
I had the best time in Fiji!!
The surf was amazing, the resort was beautiful and the food was delicious. I was also surprised to have them celebrate my birthday with a cake and a few other little gestures, it was very sweet of them. Thank you so much for all of your help I really do appreciate it!
Surfing Highlights

Frigates
World-class left-hander that can rival Cloudbreak for size, perfection and consistency. Frigates offers long walls, big barrels and a relatively easy deep-water take-off, although currents can be strong. Located around 20km offshore, Frigates is usually run as a full-day boat trip with lunch provided on the boat. Minimum numbers apply.

J’s
J’s is a fast right-hander that needs a bit of swell to get going. When it is on, this world-class wave offers hollow barrels and rippable bowl sections. It can get quite critical once overhead, so it is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers.

Shifties
Shifties is named after its shifting peaks and has a deep-water take-off, making it a less intimidating option than some of the shallower reef breaks. It picks up plenty of swell, so when other breaks are flat there is often still a wave at Shifties. The wave is powerful and thick, with long rides and the occasional barrel through the inside bowl section. It can be surfed on all tides and works best with north to northwest winds.

Pipe
Pipe is a fast, hollow left-hander known for short, powerful barrel sections. Under 3ft, it can suit a range of surfers, but once it gets bigger it becomes more critical and is best left to experienced surfers. Pipe works around mid to high tide and can handle the southeast trade winds that are common during the winter surf season.

Serua Right
Serua is a quality right-hander with an easy take-off before the wave grows in size and reels down the inside reef. On medium days, it can offer long rides with plenty of room for turns and the chance of a barrel through the inside section. It can work on all tides and is best with south to southwest swell.

Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort

Rooms feature ceiling fans, ensuite bathrooms with hot and cold water, a sitting area and a private deck looking out over the lagoon. Air-conditioned rooms are available at extra cost and are subject to availability.
Activities
Many activities are available at Matanivusi Resort, from surfing and snorkelling to kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and relaxing by the pool or spa. Guests can also experience Fijian culture through village visits, plantation walks, sustainability tours and kava ceremonies, subject to local arrangements. Included resort activities may include snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, volleyball, table tennis, boules and board games. Additional activities can also be arranged at extra cost, including shark diving, scuba diving, game fishing, waterfall trips, white water rafting, river tours, golf, day sailing and visits to Suva or nearby attractions.
Surfing
There is surf year-round in Fiji, with two main surf seasons. April to October brings consistent Southern Hemisphere groundswells, with larger swells possible during the peak winter months. November to March generally brings shorter-duration swells, but lighter and more variable winds can create excellent glassy conditions for the local reef breaks. All surf breaks accessed from Matanivusi break over coral reef, and when the waves are overhead they can be challenging for inexperienced surfers. For this reason, surfers should be competent and confident in their ability, especially on bigger days. Recommended surfboards include your regular shortboard, plus a step-up or semi-gun for larger swells. Matanivusi has access to a range of reef breaks, including local rights and lefts, plus the world-class left-hander Frigates offshore. Depending on the tide, wind, swell and surfer ability, the guides will select the best available option each day.
Dining
Matanivusi’s restaurant offers a fresh mix of Fijian, Indian and contemporary dishes, with menus based around local and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant and bar overlook the swimming pool, lagoon and nearby surf breaks, making it a relaxed place to enjoy anything from freshly prepared seafood to a Matanivusi Mai Tai. For something more romantic, candlelit dinners can be arranged on your private deck or under the giant Baka, also known as the Banyan tree.
Sustainability
The resort was named by STOKE as the world’s first sustainable surf resort. Matanivusi has been designed to minimise its environmental impact, follow sustainable operating practices and work closely with the local Fijian village community. Minimal clearing was done during construction to allow for the main building and bures, helping the resort sit naturally within its beachfront and forest setting. Sustainability initiatives include rainwater collection, responsible waste sorting and recycling, local community involvement, sustainability tours and beach clean-ups. Guests can also learn more about the surrounding environment, local plants, traditional Fijian knowledge and village life during their stay.
Yoga
The resort has a peaceful elevated platform set around the ancient “Granddaddy” Banyan Tree, creating a beautiful natural space for yoga, meditation, weddings and small celebrations. Surrounded by lush forest and the sounds of nature, it is a calm setting for stretching, quiet reflection or group wellness sessions. Matanivusi can also suit small wellness retreats, especially for groups looking to combine yoga, ocean activities, Fijian culture and a relaxed beachfront resort experience.
