Early in the 2022 surf season, I got a chance to surf some unexplored waves in the Northern Atolls close by the InterContinental Resort which was a real treat. Probably one of the best and most memorable highlights of the 10 years I’ve worked in the Maldives.

It’s amazing to think there are still unexplored and unchartered areas to surf in the year 2022.

No more than 10-20 minutes boats ride from Intercontinental Resort Maamunagau, and you are surfing uncrowded, unexplored virgin waves.

There are waves on both sides of the Raa Atoll, so depending on the wind and swell direction, you have plenty of options to explore. If you want to venture a little further, you can easily get to the south east side of the Baa Atoll too which is about 45 mins boat ride.

I visited the InterContinental for a little 3-day surf guiding trip in May this year, and had the pleasure of surfing waves all to ourselves, with one of our guests who was there with his wife on a baby-moon. They hadn’t travelled since pre-Covid and were expecting a child in the next 6 months – so this was their last trip together as a couple without kids.

The InterContinental Resort is second to none when it comes to luxury and 6 star service.

The food is next level, and the breakfast buffet is to die for. A little luxury we enjoyed early each morning before going on our 3-4 hour surf trips to near by breaks.

We had our very own speedboat with 2 expert, local crew who knew the area better than anyone. This was an advantage to explore the waves nearby – especially considering the first couple of days the weather was a little rough. Nonetheless, we managed to find a few gems on the more sheltered side of the Atoll, no more than 20 mins away.

2-4 foot every day, offshore and peeling in front of an of island into turquoise crystal clear water. Nobody around, except a few local fishermen trawling a few hundred meters out to the sea.

We rode longboards and twin fins as it was just at the beginning of the season with a smaller swell, plus we were surfing the more protected areas out of the wind. We named one the breaks after the uninhabited island we surfed in front of.

In the 10 years I’ve guided and worked in the Maldives, this was definitely one of the highlights. To think it’s 2022 and there is still a ton of secret little spots around off the maps and totally uncrowded and un-surfed most days of the year, is pretty unbelievable.

If you want a luxury resort experience with personalised one on one surf guiding to surf virgin waves in absolute paradise, than Intercontinental Resort Maldives, is definitely worth considering.
