The first half of May 2021 was one for the books with east facing breaks of Male Atolls lighting up with overhead perfection. Standout breaks include all time sessions at Kandooma Right and Tucky Joes. The last week of May was a bit subdued as South and East swell windows slowed down and monsoon winds sent through the odd squall. Although conditions were not always idyllic, plenty of decent waves were surfed as the guides put the surfers on to the swell magnets.

Moving in to June and the picture is a whole lot more enticing. A new round of South East swell built through the 2nd of June with South Males finest left turning on for a small crew who came up on the dhoni from Kandooma.

Male Atolls 5 - 10 June. Marked up forecast from Surfline

Male Atolls 5 – 10 June. Marked up forecast from Surfline. Green = SE swells, Blue S swell, Purple SSW swell.

The South East swell (green line) is pulsing in, peaking over 5 foot at 12 seconds on 6 June then hanging in at 4foot plus for the rest of the week. This swell follows the usual usual pattern, coming in from SSE (157 degrees) to begin with, then shifting more SE toward 140 degrees over the next few days. Local winds remain moderate out of the west, ensuring there will be options at most breaks with easterly exposure.

The South West to South ground swells are also a feature of this time year. These longer period ground swells push up the Indian Ocean when the storm track intensifies below South Africa. A powerful pulse from the SSW will arrive with 20-22 second wave period from 10 June. South and South West Facing breaks of Central and Male Atolls will see long waits between large sets. Although open ocean swell heights are in the modest 4 foot range, expect sets to be well overhead.

Male Atolls 12-17 June forecast from Surfline.

The second week of June continues the fun, with the SSW ground swells easing to 2’ to 3’ range. A southern ocean storm will track to the SSE of the Maldives from about 14 June. This will set up a very long fetch of SSE gales, pushing up one of the strongest swells of the the season. This swell is expected to impact breaks with south exposure from about 17 June. Although this round of swell will arrive from the South we expect a significant east component as well so mid June is looking like it will be on!
