Historically, June is a good month to be a surfer in the Maldives. The westerly monsoonal winds are offshore at the East facing breaks of the Male and Central Atolls, while the South East trade swells and South groundswells pulse and ebb. The 2021 June has been a standout, with a few epic days at spots like Kandooma Right- but the big feature has been the consistency of swell, with back to back days of good waves, pushing toward epic.

Our man Steve at Kandooma is pretty happy about some of the waves that he has been getting!

Good to note, this wave of Steve’s was on 17 June 2021 as the SE swell pulsed exactly as forecast

The waves were so good and uncrowded that Kandooma Right started to get lonely… But thankfully found its voice and posted a shout-out to the surf community!

Riptides Maldives 2021

So many days have been fun like this, Riptides was like this day after day in in late June.

Looking ahead, July is as good, probably better. Although we don’t expect any sudden peaks in swell size, it will likely to continue from the South East unabated – then building in size. Read on for what could be the best of the season to date:

First week of July (1st to 7th July 2021)

Expect the trade swell from the 140-150 degrees direction to hang in there in the 3 – 4 foot range and 10-11 seconds right through first week of July. Winds will remain moderate from the west although a bit more North in the wind will favour the lefts on some days.

Maldives Surf Forecast July 2021

South East Trade Swell (green line) continues unabated, 3’-4’ from 150-140 degrees at 10-11 seconds. Marked up forecast from Surfline

But wait! It gets better: 2nd week of July 8th to 13th July 2021

Maldives Surf Forecast July 2021

SE swell builds from 4 foot to 6 foot though the second week of July – and continues!!! marked up forecast from Surfline.

Not often does the forecast show as much promise for surf on the Male Atolls and east facing Central Atolls. If you can travel to the Maldives, book your July trip RIGHT NOW!

The fun SE trade swell of the last few weeks will kick in to high gear in the second week of July. The trade swell is created by a broad, strong fetch of ESE winds in the Southern Hemisphere reinforced by the passage of strong mid-latitude low pressure pushing up toward the Western Australian coast. At this stage, this is forecast to be the swell of the season and is expected to pulse in to the double overhead plus range at breaks across the Male Atolls. Even better, the winds look set to hover in the light to moderate range out of the west. Pretty well every break is expected to be on the pump and surfers will just need to decide how much swell they are comfortable with.

Some of the less exposed (i.e.: hidden, secret spots) will light up as the strength of swell pushes deep through the passages between atolls. The longer range forecast shows no let-up in swell, continuing in the same range all the way to the second half of July!

Maldives Surf Forecast July 2021

Strong ESE winds south of the Equator reinforced by strong Low pushing SE directly towards the Maldives in Mid July. WAMs from Swellnet

Do you reckon @shanedorian is gonna score when they hit the Central Atolls this July?

We can’t wait to see the footage when Shane, Jackson and the crew hit the Maldives right on time for this swell.
