Family Surf Trip in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is so close to Europe, just 3 hours in a plane from the Spanish coast and yet so different to mainland europe – it’s just off the coast of Africa and it’s like being in Mexico! Life is good here. The weather is great, really dry and warm – the washing dries in minutes which is a bonus!

It’s best to hire a car at the airport, the roads are very easy to navigate and you can see all around you – the landscape is dramatic, big volcanic hills and vast planes of volcanic rock dropping down into the wild oceans below. It’s like a cross between Mexico and the moon!

Surf check at Spanish lefts, Caleta de Caballos and la Santa and ended up in Famara – a really fun beach break further north of La Santa. Jack, my 4 year old, was stoked learning to surf in the white water, super safe, no strong currents and a sandy bottom, perfect for family surf trips – the surf instructor from the local surf school gave him a quick lesson on the beach and then pushed him into a few fun ones – Jack was up and riding first wave and loving it!

We ate lunch in La Santa Restaurant – really good food, kids menu, everybody happy. Off to the swimming pool for a swim and then went for a tour around the island and a ride on a camel over the volcanoes – the kids loved it….it’s such a different culture, amazing for the kids to discover another part of the world and so many good waves to surf!

Next day up for a dawny, wind was up but the waves were good – the locals don’t get early so jumped out for a wave at the Spanish lefts – just two of us out at 7:45am- some great waves just after the hide tide – 24 degrees in the water – what more could you ask for in Europe! Cheap flights, warm water, waves for everyone, good, cheap food, kids will love this family surfing holiday!!
