Sri Lanka blends lush landscapes, warm hospitality, ancient culture, and two distinct surf seasons on opposite coasts.

If you are planning a trip in 2026, here is your essential guide to entry requirements, logistics, safety, and local etiquette.

Entry Requirements & Visas for 2026

Sri Lanka uses an online Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system and has specific rules regarding visas and passports.

1. Passport Validity

Your passport should have at least six months’ validity from your date of arrival in Sri Lanka.

2. Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Important update (effective 15 October 2025): Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is mandatory for all visitors, and the Visa on Arrival facility is discontinued.
  • Apply online: www.eta.gov.lk
  • When to apply: At least one week before travel is recommended.
  • Typical processing time: Usually between one hour and 24 hours.
  • Validity: ETA permits 30 days on arrival and can be extended in-country (up to 6 months total, subject to approval).
  • Status check: If you do not receive an email confirmation, check your application here and keep a screenshot of the approval as proof: Check ETA Status

3. Pre-Arrival Declarations

Many airlines and authorities encourage completing the Arrival/Departure Card online within three (3) days before travel:

⚙️ Essential Travel Logistics

Transportation (Included with PW packages)

All PW surf packages and itineraries include a private driver/chauffeur and air-conditioned vehicle equipped for surfboards, arranged at the time of booking. This provides door-to-door service that is customised to your route, group size, and board lengths, anywhere in Sri Lanka. As a result, the need for ride-hailing (Uber/PickMe) is typically minimal while you are on-tour with us.

  • Vehicles set up for board transport (soft racks/space allocation) and luggage.
  • Flexible daily routing & timing to match surf conditions and your schedule.
  • Available for solo surfers, families, and larger groups; child seats on request.
  • Rail + local access: We can integrate train journeys (e.g., scenic routes) and last-mile tuk-tuk or 4WD transfers to remote surf spots as part of your itinerary.

Optional ride-hailing (when needed)

If you require ad-hoc rides outside your PW itinerary (e.g., independent evenings out), the two major apps are widely used in cities and many coastal towns:

AppKey Advantage for TouristsPayment Tips
PickMe:  Local coverage with tuk-tuks, cars, and larger vehicles; competitive pricing.Cash is common; some cards are supported in-app. Confirm any luggage/board fees in advance.
Uber:  Familiar interface; easy fare estimates; good availability in Colombo and larger towns.Cards often supported in-app; cash may be available. Verify roof-rack or soft-rack availability for surfboards.

Surfboard transport tip: For longer boards, vans/wagons with soft racks are best; tuk-tuks are fine for short hops with smaller boards—confirm handling and price before loading.

Connectivity (SIM Card & Wi-Fi)

  • Best-known providers: Dialog and Mobitel offer wide coastal coverage, including popular surf hubs (e.g., Weligama, Hikkaduwa, Arugam Bay).
  • eSIM/airport kiosks: Tourist SIMs are available at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Bring your passport for registration.
  • Plan duration: Tourist bundles typically run 28–30 days with data packages suitable for maps and rides.

Electricity (Plugs and Voltage)

  • Voltage: 230V
  • Frequency: 50Hz
  • Plug Types: Type D and Type G are the most common; Type M also appears in some properties.

Bring a universal travel adapter. Many accommodations provide multi-socket extensions, but do not rely on this.

️ Safety, Scams & Health

Safety & Common Scams

Sri Lanka is welcoming and generally safe, but standard travel precautions apply, especially in crowded areas and transport hubs.

  • Money & ATMs: Use bank-branch ATMs where possible and shield your PIN. Avoid street currency exchanges with unusually favorable rates.
  • Taxis & tuk-tuks: When outside your PW itinerary, use PickMe/Uber where available or agree the fare before a metered ride. Confirm board fees beforehand.
  • Petty theft: Keep valuables out of sight, especially on busy buses, trains, and beaches at dusk.
  • Beach scams: Politely decline unsolicited “guides,” “board rentals,” or “lesson deals” that feel pushy; book with reputable shops/schools.

Health & Surf Safety

  • Travel insurance: Ensure your policy covers surfing and potential medical evacuation.
  • Reef awareness: Many breaks are reef-based. Wear booties if needed; carry a small first-aid kit for coral cuts.
  • Rip currents & conditions: Check local forecasts and talk to surf shops or lifeguards. Avoid isolated sessions at unfamiliar spots.
  • Food & water: Choose reputable venues and drink safe water. If sensitive, stick to bottled or filtered water and avoid ice of unknown origin.

Sri Lankan Cultural Etiquette

A friendly attitude and modest dress go a long way, especially away from tourist zones.

  • Temples & sacred sites: Shoulders and knees should be covered; remove shoes and hats; be respectful when taking photos.
  • Right-hand custom: Use your right hand for giving/receiving items and for eating in traditional settings.
  • Poya (full-moon) days: Public holidays occur monthly; alcohol sales and some activities may be restricted.
  • Beachwear: Swimwear is for the beach only; cover up in towns and villages.
  • Language: A few phrases in Sinhala or Tamil are appreciated; English is widely used in tourist areas.

Surf Seasons & Where to Go

  • South/West (Nov–Apr): Weligama, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Ahangama, Midigama. Good variety of reef and beach breaks; good for lessons and intermediates.
  • East (Apr–Oct): Arugam Bay and surrounding points.
  • Board rentals & schools: Widely available in major hubs; quality varies, so inspect boards and confirm prices/damage policies.
