South Male lefts, 20th Sept 2021, pic Jinu

The Maldives surf season of 2021 has been like nothing we can remember, not just from the lack of surfers in the water as a result of travel restrictions! The continual strong swells from the South East quadrant have lit up the east-facing breaks with back-to-back swells. Occasional South groundswells have also kept surfers on their toes, the swell of the season to date impacting Male Atolls on 10th and 11th September, exactly as forecast.

Check out Yoni Klein as he hopped between South Male for the SE swells and North Male for the peak of the South Swell, then back to Kandooma for more barrels.

Looking ahead 25 – 30 September 2021

The fun times continue on Male Atolls as the SE (145 – 135 degrees @ 9 seconds) swells continue around the 3 foot size before slowly easing to 2 foot towards the end of the month. These swells work at most breaks, so waves everywhere. The westerly winds will get strong and gusty around 27th, yet still offshore at East-facing breaks.

Swell Alert – Major SSE swell Inbound! Pumping from 1 October 2021

One of the best swells of the season is brewing with a mid-lattitude low brewing in the Indian Ocean set to send a powerful pulse towards the Maldives. This rare setup is perfectly positioned east of the Maldives so that the strongest fetch points back NW towards the archipelago.

Check this SSE swell peaking around 6’- 7′ @11 seconds and 165 degrees. Even better, the westerly winds have wound back to the light-moderate range ensuring east facing breaks of Male and Central Atolls are groomed to perfection! Expect everywhere to pump with overhead waves and bigger at exposed reefs.

Swells slowly trend down to 3 foot range by the 5th October as winds trend NW and ease, there will be some very fun lefts at the SE facing breaks.

A new round of south swell set to build from the 6th October, wait and see if it will be significant!
