Just wanted to say my wife and I have had a great trip to Kandooma. The surf turned on in the last 4 days and has been super fun waves!! As I type Kandooma Right is pumping so hard to say goodbye. We ended up having 22 dives between us in great conditions, what a great place to dive. Thank you Moose, Andrea and Eddie from the professional dive team. All staff in the resort have been amazing and ultra helpful and have made this trip a cracker. A special call out to the Perfect Wave staff who made the Kandooma surf experience a fun one. Absolute delight
Kandooma was an absolute delight! The island is beautifully kept and the people, especially the locals, are amazing. We loved our stay in the Overwater Villa, the food was great and the service excellent. We enjoyed the excellent massage at the Spa, and the gym is well appointed for what you would need. We enjoyed small but clean waves at Kandooma Right, and the trips to Tucky Joes and Quarters were quick and lots of fun. We will certainly be back and look forward to see what all the renovations will produce.

Surfing Highlights
Kandooma Right
Breaking a stone’s throw from the Kandooma Resort, this is a fast breaking right with two take off spots and a great barrel.
Tucky Joes / Boatyards
On its day, Tucky Joes is the best wave in the Maldives: a perfect, long, wrap-around barrelling wave from the outside take-off spot to the end section. When the sections link up it can run for more than 400 metres, one barrel section after another.
It’s open to SE swell and powerful for its size, and some people nickname it the Maldivian Cloudbreak.
Kitchens
Kitchens is Kandooma’s exclusive learn-to-surf break: a beginner-friendly right and left that rolls gently into the beach. It’s a perfect spot for families and spectators, and a super easy, safe place to learn to surf.
Natives / Foxys
This wave is very fast and hollow breaking over relatively shallow coral. It’s “Goofys Paradise” or if you’re fast on the backhand you will love this wave. Breaks for 100 to 150 metres and provides many barrel opportunities. Best with SE swell and NW wind. On transfer you will visit both Foxy’s and Rip Tides, so you get the best of both worlds.
Riptides
A right hander breaking for 150 metres on a reef in the middle of a channel. You need a boat transfer to reach it, even though it’s very close. The wave is aptly named as sometimes very strong currents can sweep you seaward so we always check current conditions before settling in for a session. Great wave for the longboarders and shortboarders as well as low intermediate surfers, providing very carvable walls with the occasional hollow section. Best with S swell and SW wind.
Quarters
Quarters picks up a bit of S to SE swell and is a reliable wave throughout the season. The wave has two sections, the outside is an open faced, slow and cruisy wave perfect for longboarders and even beginners. The inside section is a really nice, fast little right-hander that on its day delivers perfect barrels. Best in winds W to NW, named after the resort workers’ quarters on the island.

How far is Kandooma Resort Maldives from Malé airport?
Kandooma is in the South Malé Atoll, a 40 to 45 minute shared speedboat ride from Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. Return speedboat transfers are included in our example packages, so there’s no domestic flight or seaplane to book, and you don’t lose a day to transfers.
How do I get to Kandooma Resort?
Fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé, which has direct connections to hubs including Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, London and Frankfurt. On arrival, a Perfect Wave representative meets you and you transfer by speedboat straight to Kandooma.
Who can surf Kandooma Right?
Kandooma Right breaks just steps from the villas and is surfed by guests on the Perfect Wave surf program. Perfect Wave is Kandooma’s worldwide exclusive surf operator, so you book your surf package through us. The program includes unlimited access to Kandooma Right, and surfer numbers are capped so the wave stays uncrowded.
How many surfers are there at Kandooma?
Surfer numbers are limited to 45 at any one time at Kandooma, and each dhoni trip to the nearby breaks takes a maximum of 12 surfers. Perfect Wave has run the surf program at Kandooma since 2007.
Which other waves can I surf from Kandooma?
As well as Kandooma Right out front, the surf program includes daily scheduled dhoni transfers to nearby South Malé breaks including Riptides, Foxy’s, Twin Peaks, Quarters, Tucky Joes and Last Stop. Is Kandooma good for beginner surfers?
Yes. Kitchens is Kandooma’s own learn-to-surf break, a beginner-friendly right and left that rolls gently into the beach. Our coaches run small-group lessons (maximum 4 surfers) on the peeling wave in front of the resort and on a sandbank where you can learn over soft white sand, and there’s a Kids Club Surf Camp for children under 12.
Is Kandooma Resort good for families?
Yes. The Kids Club is for ages 4 to 12, and there’s a Kids Club Surf Camp, Mum & Me yoga and plenty of water activities. Families can stay in the Family Beach Pool Villa, with a private pool and direct beach access, or the two-level Two Bedroom Beach House Sea View with Pool, designed for families and friend groups.
What’s included in a Kandooma surf package?
Our example packages include accommodation in your chosen villa, return shared speedboat transfers, service charge, GST and Green Tax, the surf program for one surfer and a AU$50 contribution to A Perfect Foundation. All-inclusive is now standard and covers daily breakfast, lunch and dinner, unlimited beverages within a specified band and a selection of daily snacks.

When is the best time to surf at Kandooma?
The most consistent swells for the Malé Atolls arrive between April and October. The Malé Atolls are prime from June. Outside the season, Kandooma keeps a surf guide on the island, with tiny waves for beginners. Conditions vary from week to week, so talk to us about the latest conditions before you book, and see our Maldives surf season guide for every region.
What can non-surfers do at Kandooma?
Plenty. Resort inclusions cover snorkelling equipment, daily guided reef snorkelling (weather permitting), a Sunset Splash Cruise and a Sunrise Fishing Excursion (one each per person, per stay) and a 30-minute treatment per adult, per stay at Kandooma Spa by COMO Shambhala. Certified divers get one complimentary guided dive a day on stays of 4+ nights. Yoga, SUP, foiling lessons and jetski tours are also available.
Can I rent a surfboard at Kandooma?
Yes. Perfect Wave Maldives has its board hub at Kandooma, so you can book your preferred board in advance and it will be waiting for you. Kandooma also rents surfboards, mini mals, longboards, soft boards and SUPs on request.
Do I need a visa for the Maldives?
No. The Maldives gives visitors a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, so you don’t need to apply before you travel. Every traveller must complete the IMUGA Traveller Declaration online within 96 hours before their flight to the Maldives. To be safe, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date. You’ll still need to meet the standard entry requirements at the airport. Do I need cash at Kandooma, and which currency?
Kandooma accepts credit cards for most spending, but it’s worth carrying some newer-series USD notes for tips, incidentals and small costs at the airport. The official currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa, but USD is preferred and accepted almost everywhere. Local ATMs dispense Rufiyaa only, and you can’t exchange other currencies for USD once you’re there, so bring the USD you need.
Which Maldives atoll is best for a surf trip?
It depends on when you’re travelling. The Malé Atolls, the Central Atolls and the Southern Atolls all have strong surf at different times of year. Kandooma, in the South Malé Atoll, is one of the most convenient options thanks to its short transfer from Malé.
