This idyllic PNG retreat is set on a 76 hectare private plantation located in the surf rich east coast of New Ireland Province, an unchartered surf territiry with the potential for empty world class waves. Rubio Plantation Retreat’s rustic traditional accommodation exudes a home-stay vibe as you’re personally greeted on arival by your hosts. Rubio Plantation Retreat starts from its own private beach with a barrelling A-frame peak out the front, best viewed from the dining area, and goes high up into the mountains where there’s many trails to explore. Rubio Plantation Retreat’s home wave can be surfed on any tide and is a short paddle out. The toughest part of surfing it is whether to go right or left.

Deserted waves in a tranquil tropical setting
Rubio is just the ticket if you are chasing excellent waves in a super remote location. PNG is at the frontier of surf adventure travelling. The wave choices are immense at Rubio. Under the guidance of retreat owner and charging surfer, Shane, you will get an experience like no other. The beach front bungalows have you listening to the serene sound of the waves 24/7. The food is great with amazing local produce served at every meal. The local Rubio staff are all smiling and friendly, with the lads Kenny & Freddy ready to take you out surfing or fishing any time. Rubio Right
A super fun wave on small to medium ENE swells. Fast walls and occasional barrel race in to a channel at the base of a cliff. Occasional Lefts are shorter and end on shallow reef.
Kanons
Hollow A-Frame offering thick barrels before rolling off into deep water. Best in small to medium swells
Bulu
Fast right coral reef-point break. Multiple barrel sections. Watch the local kids riding their ‘splinter’ wooden boards.

There are 3 standard bungalows and 2 family bungalows (2-bedroom).
For a booking of 7 or more guests, we will reserve the whole retreat at no additional cost.
Groups of 6 can pay for 6 1/2 and groups of 5 can pay for 6 and get the whole retreat.
The Retreat
Rubio Plantation Retreat bungalows are made from native materials and are located along the beachfront. The retreats buildings are built using sustainably harvested wood the they cut themselv and is run on solar and micro hydro power. Rubio use spring water and rain water for all their needs, both water systems are gravity feed, so require no power. Their waste water is run through a grey water system that waters their gardens. The septic is set up so it waters and fertilises part of the plantation. They limit the number of guests to 15, so there is never a crowd. They also limit the number of surfers at the retreat to 10 and the number of visiting surfers to the central coast region is limited to 20 by the local Surf Management Plan.
Accommodation
Rubio's accommodation consists of 6 separate bungalows. All bungalows are made from native materials and are located along the beachfront. Each bed is fitted with a mosquito net. There is 1 standard and 2 deluxe bungalows which are twin share while the 2 family bungalows consists of 2 separate bedrooms each. The master bedroom has a queen size bed with the other bedroom is twin share. Extra beds can be fitted in a room if needed. There are flush toilets and showers in the deluxe and family bungalows with the standard bungalows sharing a separate central amenities block. Solar panels and hydroelectric provide power for the retreat. You only need a group of 7 to book out the entire surf retreat exclusively for your group.
Meals
Rubio Plantation Retreat's local chef serves up three hearty, family-style meals daily consisting of a combination of European, Asian and local foods. The kitchen bakes home-made breads and pastries daily and tea and coffee are available at all times. Chocolate is Rubio's specialty as they grow their own cocoa beans on the plantation. The meals are served in the dining area overlooking the beach and surf break.
Activities
Sing Sings (traditional dancing) and Mumus (traditional cooking in an underground oven) can be arranged with the local village. A trip by boat can be arranged to visit the world famous Malangan carvers on Tabar Island. Visitors come from around the world to enjoy the excellent bird watching. There are several interesting caves nearby to be explored. For hikers the possibilities are endless. At Pam Village there is a beautiful waterfall very near the road. PNG is world-renowned for its diving and snorkeling, the reefs alive with abundant sea life. Explore the rugged cliffs along the coast, viewing spinner dolphins, flying foxes, and blowholes in our traditional outrigger canoes. The Buluminski Highway is perfect for bicycles as there are no steep sections. You can ride from town and then be driven back. It is a wonderful way to really see the countryside.
Surf
Rubio has a good, consistent break right on the beach directly in front of the retreat. There are also many other good breaks in the local area. Surf spots range from mellow longboard waves (depending on swell size and direction) to fast and hollow reef passes. There is vast range of both rights and lefts open to the varying swell directions. There are boats and vehicles available to take you out to the many excellent breaks on the offshore islands or along the coast. Due to the limited number of surfers allowed at the resort, SUPers are only allowed at the resort with a full resort bookin - which is only 7 guests.
