Surfing Highlights
E-Bay
One of the best lefts in Mentawai, this wave is a perfect, round and it has a powerful wall that can be barreled all the way when it’s going off. When it is less than 5 feet it is an easy perfection with two nice barrel sections.
Kandui (aka No-Kandui)
A long barrelling left that wraps around Karangmajat Island. Usually very sectiony, but can line up on the largest of swells. Many barrels on offer, but usually only makeable for one or two sections before closing out. Advanced surfers only.
Nipussi
A shorter right that breaks down the point from Bank Vaults. Definitely fun and rippable. Usually has fairly deep water from the takeoff to the inside. Ends in a riptide that sucks all the water back out to sea. A good option when there’s not much swell, and usually the most consistent spot in the area.
Beng Bengs
A super fun left that is perfectly positioned to protect you from any South winds. Great for most abilities including the grommets as it peels into a bay with deeper water and an easy paddle back. It does have a smaller take off zone.
Burger World
Like a point break, the right at Burgerworld runs down the coral reef offer super fun walls and the odd barrel section. A known swell-magnet Burgerworld can offer long rides when other breaks are not really showing. Popular in the ‘off season’ when small to mid sized south swells combine with light winds.
Hideaways
On the north side of a smaller island, offshore when wind is from the South East. Hideaways is a very hollow left that can be very shallow at lower tides. The waves come out of deep water, then unload on a shallow section of reef before barrelling towards the channel.

The Camp
The accommodation is in a beautiful traditional Mentawai timber house of 170 square meters. This private, 4-bedroom guesthouse can cater to a maximum of 10 people with 2 double rooms, and the other 2 rooms have bunk beds. The rooms are fitted in with air-conditioning, mosquito nets and electricity outlets plugs, and all bed linen is provided. Bathroom facilities are in a separate shower and toilet block. One of the bathrooms has hot showers.
The Surf Boats
A total of 3 speedboats, two big and one small one. These boats are hand-made Mentawai canoes designed and made by locals in Siberut. The local construction ensures that they have been created to work and be effective in any Mentawaian sea and weather condition. They are also equipped with surfboard racks, seats and a roof to protect you from the strong tropical sun. The smaller boat can carry 4 people and runs with one engine of 40 hp, while one of the big ones can carry 8 people and the other one up to 10 and both run with two engines of 40 hp each.
The Meals
The Beng Beng surf camp package includes 3 healthy and delicious meals per day. After two hard surfing sessions per day, nothing’s better than satisfying your appetite, so the chef will pamper you with the delights of his menu that includes a mix of Italian, Indonesian and western cuisine. Fish of the day: depending on the day's catch, you will sample some really fresh and tasty fish cooked in the oven, on the BBQ or in one of the many other possible ways.
The Location
The surf camp is situated on the west side of the Nyang Nyang Island. A sunny tropical paradise, immersed in the Indian Ocean. After a long journey, you can rest your body and your mind relaxing on a sun bed by the beach, looking at the deep blue ocean that surrounds you. Or, if admiring the perfect left-hander ‘E-Bay’ right in front of the surf camp is too much temptation, grab your board and start paddling toward it.
Local People
The local people live a semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle in the coastal and rain-forest environments of the island. The population is estimated to be about 64,000 and the Mentawai language belongs to the Austronesian language family. The Mentawai people live in the traditional dwelling called the uma, which is a longhouse and is made by weaving bamboo strips together to make walls and thatching the roofs with grass.
