Lagundri Bay, on the island of Nias, has been the poster wave for Indonesia’s mix of perfection and adventure for almost half a century. More recently it was one of the few waves to emerge from the deadly 2005 earthquake with its reef contour and reputation intact. And while Lagundri Bay, with its perfect barrel and dry-haired paddle is called the best seven-seconds in surfing, there are plenty of other great waves within reach. The waves of Asu and Bawa on the nearby Hinako Islands are a short boat trip away, while other secret gems lie hidden in plain sight on the mainland.
