High above the beautiful rolling waves of Sri Lanka’s southern coast stands the true cliff-top Garden of Eden that is Cape Weligama.

Hidden among an oasis of emerald green palm fronds and sheer faces of stone falling into the sea, this 12-acre establishment is poised in understated elegance and luxury. From above, the hotel resembles a quaint Sri Lankan village of old, with each of its 39 private villas resting within their own watta (local word for garden). Yet beneath their humble exteriors, the contemporary spaces unfold as a picture of stylish ingenuity thanks to the handy-work of celebrated architect Lek Bunnag.

The rooms - referred to as retreats - are beyond spacious, offering all the modern amenities you would expect, while maintaining a touch of classic local charm.Picture deep mahogany woods, stone and bamboo trimmings in a calming, flower-scented space with ocean views.Start your morning on the patio with a beautiful breakfast before surfing some of the surrounding beach breaks.

Or head slightly further afield to consistently fun waves like Mirissa or Hikkaduwa reef.Return for a classic fish and chips, or burgers and salads style lunch and spend the afternoon soaking in the crescent-shaped infinity pool that blends seamlessly with the horizon.

Finally watch the crimson sun fall behind its stunning curtain of blue and enjoy a delectable choice of fine-dining into the evening as lamps flicker against the high-ceilings and waves crash in the background.

Regardless of your eating preference, Cape Weligama prides itself on offering gourmet food inspired by its location by the sea. You can choose your catch of the day and have it prepared at the De Mauny restaurant which stares out across the ocean.

Or take your pick of the Sri Lankan style Kumbuk and open-air space with a specialty for local-style curries or Rouge, a steakhouse and grill sitting right on the dramatic edge of the cliff. And, if that’s not enough you can enjoy traditional Ceylon high tea, or after dinner nightcaps at the charming, waterfront Taylor Pavilion.Cape Weligama certainly do make it hard to leave, offering an in-room Spa and dining service as well as an air-conditioned gym to stay in shape while in paradise.Your little ones will also have plenty of safe splashing space in the Cove Pool, and enough room to explore in the manicured property.

But taking a small meander down the hotels private stone pathways is a simple must. Here you’ll find two secluded coves, rejuvenating turquoise water, and even turtles which often love to flap about in the shallows.

Swim or snorkel beneath the cliffs, or choose a new adventure for every day of the week. Sri Lanka’s southern coastline and Weligama itself is blessed with a bounty of fun, albeit softer waves, plenty of diving sites, and opportunities to see whales, dolphins and of course Elephants which still roam freely in the tropical wild.

Accommodation

Intimate and striking villa-style accommodations await guests of Cape Weligama. Designed by celebrated Thai architect Lek Bunnag, each of the five-star hotel’s private residences and suites create the impression of an idyllic island escape.

Set within one of eight stone ringed gardens which include a semi-private pool to share between two or three stand alone villas, the residences aim to create the privacy of a boutique space, while maintaining the benefits of a world-class hotel. This means your own private Butler, an individual and very private garden space, and dining and Spa facilities within your room. Of all accommodations, however The Cape Weligama Residence is by far the most impressive.

Stare across the endless Indian Ocean from the vista of a 15 metre, private infinity pool as you watch the sunset with your favourite cocktail in hand. Or wake up to views of the turquoise sea from both bedrooms and across two levels. Ample space, beautiful furnishings and the privacy of your own watta will make this an unforgettable stay. Especially suited for couples or honeymooners with a blow out budget. The Cove Pool, which is better suited to the little ones, is surrounded by the Master Rooms. These rooms are especially well-suited to families or friends happy to share space and company.

Surf & Other Activities

Surfing has gained popularity in the southern-most reaches of Sri Lanka, a country well loved for it’s beautiful culture, it’s exciting foods and warm-hearted people. And, when it comes to surfing, options abound along this wave-rich coast. Cape Weligama can produce great waves, but they are most often smaller and better-suited to beginners. But if you’re looking for waves with a bit more grunt, you can easily take a trip to nearby breaks like Hikkaduwa reef or Mirissa. The same bounty of southerly swells that hit Indonesia, also eventually find their way to the southwest coast of Sri Lanka.

But the higher latitude here causes these long southwest lines to loose some of their energy, which makes for more manageable yet consistent surf for most of the season.

For the southwest coast, including Weligama, this begins from around the end of October until April, when monsoon northeasterly winds create offshore and often glassy conditions on this side of the island.

You can expect waves between two to six foot, and a breaking wave at almost any time of the year at Hikkaduwa’s A-Frames, a known swell-magnet. The wave is fun on the high-tide but has the potential to produce some epic barrels on its day. During the rainy season (April through October) bigger swells tend to batter the coast, but the onshore and dirty water will make for a slightly less pleasant experience in the water. In saying that, you can still get lucky and score the early session, with some nice waves and less people. The southwest coast offers a range of options for surfers, and transport is easily arranged in Sri Lanka or through the hotel.

Ian, (December 2015)

“This is a must stay on any boutique trip to Sri Lanka. This property has set a new standard in Sri Lanka for accommodation, amenities and personal care. A room butler (in our case an internationally expertly trained Pradesh) looks after any care from buggy transport to complementary laundry. High tea and evening drinks were all done with style. We have stayed at Tea Trails which was splendid and this is by the same Dilmah Tea family. They are to be commended for building a remarkable structure and providing a high quality Relaix and Chateau experience on the coast. Don't drive past this amazing location as it will be one of your life's great memories. Have a look at the remarkable location and images. I will be going back soon.”

Azam, (August 2015)

“Pure bliss. A few words that explain my two days at Cape Weligama. Amazing location. Super comfortable. Glorious food. Fabulous service. Peaceful. Absolutely Relaxing. Child friendly. Breathtaking. Will be back for sure.”

Rusa, (December 2015)

“We had a wonderful stay in Cape Weligama and we will definitely come back to this amazing place. The staff was just great and especially our personal butler Bandara. He arranged candle light dinner for us and made sure that we were never without anything - the best butler ever. The food was just wonderful! Congratulations to the Chef and Sous-chef. We appreciated the policy "no bills to sign" a lot and we think that this is a real asset for Cape Weligama as it helps to have an even more relaxing stay at the resort.”
