One of the first European style ski resorts to ever open in Japan, the Akakura Kanko Hotel has a long history as a lodge for skiers hoping to tackle the nearby Mount Myoko. In recent years the hotel has been renovated to bring it into the 21st Century, though it still retains its classic charm and warm service. Along with ski in, ski out, on site hot springs and an award winning day spa, Akakura Kanko also throws in complementary transfers from the bus and train terminals. In short, they offer a no fuss, pure luxury winter escape. It’s perfect for unwinding, and just forgetting about the outside world.
Established in 1937, the Akakura Kanko Hotel was one of the first European-style ski resorts in Japan. Today it combines that old-world tradition with modern amenities and a unique Japanese touch, in one of the most remarkable hotel settings anywhere. From its 1,000-meter high perch are views of the mountains all around, Lake Nojiri sparkling to the east, and, on a clear day, you can see all the way to Sado Island across the Sea of Japan.
The entire hotel was recently extensively renovated, keeping its special style while ensuring the highest levels of quality and service.
You literally ski out the door to the Akakura Onsen Ski Area; with more than 13 meters of snow annually, you're guaranteed great skiing at this diverse ski area. Enjoy a four kilometer run from the 1,500-meter-plus top of the hill, or whatever else fits your skills and interests: powder skiing, bumps, terrain parks; even just fun family cruising.
Of course, Akakura Kanko isn't just about skiing. The hotel also has access to some lovely hot springs, which can be a great reward after a day on the slopes. The area is also well suited to summer sports, such as hiking.
The hotel has 52 comfortable, spacious guest rooms. Both Western and Japanese style rooms are available, each with panoramic mountain views. Two different mineral hot springs are also available on site. There is also an indoor pool with spectacular views of the ski slopes.
The hotel also has excellent dining at the Terrace and Ajisai restaurants, while drinks and snacks are available at the lobby lounge and the bar.
Overall the hotel's features include:
- Award winning day spa
- On site bakery
- Pick up from the train station
- On site hot springs
- Ski lifts
- Japanese and western style meals
- Free wi-fi
Surf & Other Activities
Akakura Kanko's biggest attraction is the skiing on Mount Myoko. This 2,454 meter high beast of a mountain offers skiing for all skill levels. With the hotel located right on the mountain, there's no better way to enjoy Mount Myoko. However, Akakura Kanko does boast activities for every season. Skiing is possible from late December to mid/end April; golfing at the Hotel's 18-hole course is possible in spring, summer and fall are well suited to hiking, sightseeing in the area or in nearby Nagano city, wildlife watching, biking and mountain climbing. There's always something to do at the Akakura Kanko Hotel.
