Surf & Other Activities

Surfing

Portugal,in Southern Europe, shares the Iberian Peninsula at the western tip ofEurope with Spain. It picks up north, west and south swells, resultingin very regular surf. Very mild climate with plenty of consistent surfand variety of breaks make Portugal the ideal location for Europeans toescape the colder northern winters. It is an excellent place to learn tosurf with lots of places offering easy point-breaks and beautifulbeachbreaks often sheltered from the wind by tall surrounding cliffs. It’s a real all year round European surf destination.

  • Coxos: A long, fast, hollow right-hander.  Holds big swell and is a very powerful wave but access to the water is really difficult and the currents are strong.
  • Ribeira d’Ilhas: Consistent but crowded some rips and urchins to watch out for.  A great right-hander worth getting wet for.  It can deal with a bit of wind and most swell size
  • Praia do norte: One of the most reliable waves in Ericeira.  Handles swells of almost any size and from any direction.
  • Furnas: When the swell is too big for anywhere else to work, then Furnas will have some rights off the groyne.  Peaks all over the place and the cliff shelters this break from the northerly wind.
