Captain & Crew

At the head of the crew of 5, you’ll find the licensed captain. He is ultimately in control of the safari. Cobia's captain, a fun-loving character, has decades of experience boat chartering in the Maldives, and is supported by a second in charge, boat boy, and a full time chef. The boat boy will be in charge of guest services and one will be a dinghy boy and in charge of anchoring. The crew know the area extensively and you can be confident of their skills & expertise. The chef on the Cobia, Asoka, is a long-time employee, his meals are famous within the Maldives safari fleet and really are a highlight of Cobia Safaris.

One of the most important parts of any surf charter is your surf guide. Your surf guide on the Cobia is employed full-time by TPW Maldives and trained by ISA (International Surf Association) as a Surf Instructor and SGA (Surf Guide Association) in safety, rescue, first aid and hospitality. All our hand selected, well trained guides have been running surf charters for many years and are the best and most experienced in the Maldives. With the largest network of surf operations in the Maldives they know where & when it is good and will put you in the spot. They will also be in daily contact with TPW Regional Operations Manager to ensure you have everything covered for an amazing Maldivian surf experience.

Meals on the boats are all-you-can-eat and are a mixture of Maldivian, Sri Lankan and western dishes. The chefs are also willing to adjust the menu to suit individual needs if required. You can advise us after you book if you have any allergies and we can advise the chef before your trip. For Breakfast, tea, coffee, fruit, juice, toast, cereals and eggs and/or pancakes are provided.  Lunch & dinner is a banquet of five different dishes with daily variations including fresh fish & tuna dishes, curries, rice and pasta dishes, vegetables and salads. Meat dishes are provided but usually we try to provide fresh food from the local environment. Evening meals are followed by dessert and lunch is followed by a fruit dish. Tea and coffee is served after all meals. A bunch of bananas ripen on deck and you can eat these as you wish. Water is also free and you will be given your own Perfect Wave water bottle on arrival which you can put your name on and refill as you wish. This helps save the local environment from the pollution of using plastic bottles.

Southern / Outer Atolls

It is often said that the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll (also named Huvadhoo Atoll) offers the best conditions of the Maldives. It works best in March, April, and September to November due to lighter winds, but has consistent waves all season long. It picks up more swell than any other Atoll in the Maldives and from every direction. The Gaafu Dhaalu area offers the greatest quantity and variety of spots. To almost every island on the outside of the atoll, you will find one or two breaks. There is everything from barreling and hollow walls to soft and never ending playful waves.

After you arrive in Male you will fly down south where our guide will pick you up at the local airport in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Anchors are lifted and you head off to one of the main 8 breaks or to some of the other less known spots. The Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll offers the greatest variety of all atolls and most diverse breaks. You will find everything from mellow long board waves to the hollow barrels. Depending on the wind direction our experienced surf guide will find spots for you that are working best at the time. Most days, you will surf up to 6 hours or even longer if you can handle it! After some of the best surf of your life, you will be dropped off at the Gaafu Dhaalu airport and flown back to Male.

For more information on the Southern/Outer Atolls, with break descriptions and seasonality, please check out our Central & Southern Atolls region page.

Please note that maximum size of surf boards allowed on Maldives domestic flights to Central and Southern Atolls is 8 ft including the board bag.

Bob Fawcett, our guide, and his crew were simply excellent. The food and service was amazing.

Stephen (March 2018)

My 12th trip to the Maldives and the best one by far. The crew on board the Cobia were superb. The food was off the scale and the surf guide knew where the best conditions would be and we scored perfect 4-5ft glassy conditions for 7 days straight. Can’t wait to do it all again! Thanks Perfect Wave👍

 Adrian Shippey (September 2017),

A boat charter was on my bucket list but why wait. The Perfect Wave experience for me was a combination of may things, including great waves, choice of numerous surf spots depending on wind and swell, fantastic guide, good food and great company. Overall the experience exceeded my expectations.

Alan Mcclatchey (September 2017),

This was an brilliant trip.
The Cobia is smaller than many of the newer cruiser boats around but is was totally perfect for our group size of 9 surfers. We were a group made up of a mixed booking of two or three people to make up the 9 surfers so we didn't know each other before, but Bob the surf guide and the crew made us all immediately at home.
The rooms are very comfortable, cleaned every day, and there is air con as well as a fan to keep cool at night. Bob the guide and the crew are incredibly friendly and enjoy joining in the banter and laughs, and they always go out of their way to do their best to help. The food is totally amazing. The chef managed to cook an astonishing variety of incredibly tasty food every day and every meal seemed to have more than any of us could eat.

Richard Edmonds (Sept 2017),

We were fortunate to be upgraded to the new boat in the fleet which had more space. The boat was fantastic and the crew were excellent in servicing our needs.

 Glenn Jackson (June 2017)

All good with Maldives surf trip, a very memorable trip with heaps of good waves, sunshine, great food, beers & laughter. Boat crew were excellent & more than accommodating.

Olivier Colombié (April 2017)

the food was terrific even for french!

the boat is very comfortable and the upper deck is a must

Laurent (April 2017)

Karyn (October 2016)
My all girls boat trip to the Maldives aboard the Cobia was amazing!!! The crew were exceptional, we had great waves every day and for me it was a trip of a lifetime.
Thanks Perfect Wave and the Cobia crew, I'm stoked!!!

Sophie (October 2016)
Absolutely loved the whole experience, one of the best trips I've been on! The surf spots were great and the instructors/guides were super down to earth. Will definitely be coming back!

Steve (March 2016)
As always this was a totally memorable trip. The organisation was first class from start to finish. To organise a trip for two people is hard enough let alone eight people on a boat with connecting flights. I will definitely be booking with Perfect Wave on my next trip.

Mark (March 2016)
Perfect Wave put on a great charter with Cobia, Crew and Surf Guide Rob are a great team. Found some excellent waves with accompanying favourable offshore conditions at many different locations, plus a visit to a local resort to see another aspect to holidaying in the Maldives and local customs. Excellent charter would go with Rob and Cobia again. Rob's photographs much appreciated. Yewweee.

Glenn (April 2015)
Just had another great trip with Perfect Wave through the Southern Maldivian atolls on the Cobia. Without doubt this vessel has the most attentive crew, best food and most knowledgeable surf guide I have ever encountered on any surf trip. We were always in the best spot and made the absolute most of the conditions - surfed every day. The vessel is clean, well laid out and our cabin was roomy and fresh with good air conditioning when needed. Can't fault them in any way and would recommend Perfect wave to anyone wanting a great value, quality surf trip to a unique destination.

Surf charters take on a life of their own and you often feel that you never want them to end. If there is such a thing as too much fun then we have certainly found it on this trip!.. Last night the crew threw a party for us. Not your average â€traditional sing-along’, instead they brought their mates on board and everyone was up and dancing, pretty awesome way to end the trip! The entire charter has been amazing. I can’t wait until the next one!…

I've been home now for a couple of weeks after my trip to the Maldives. I was on a live aboard surf boat called Cobia - takes 8 with 5 crew. I shared a cabin with a friend.12 days all included. I had some of the best surf of my life with a good 4 to 6 foot swell and some times 2 surfs a day even 3 a day. Water temp 30 degs and viz up to 30 m.We went to north Male' islands and south Male' islands and surfed breaks called Chickens were i snaped my board clean in half on a rouge set. It was like an axe that chopped me in half.Other places called Cokes as there is a Coca Cola factory on the island that makes bottle water, desalinated from the sea water. Sultans, Pasta point, Hokies, Jails break as there is a old jail there.Rip tide and a fast left called happy dazes. We walked around some of the villages which are quite small and most are only a meter above sea level. Lot of resorts and an ideal place to have a holiday.Enjoy the photo.Regards, Pete.

Was an epic couple of weeks. Those phantom big swells never did quite hit but we had some cracking days and some decent 5' pulses so happy days!!Big ups to Marty. Awesome guide, loving the local knowledge, make sure you hang on to him!! Mentioned it to him at the time, but let him know that he is welcome at ours if he makes it to Melb's during his Ozzie sojourn later this year. The rest of the crew were fantastic, especially the chef…Gold. Will certainly be back.Onya!!Cheers

Hi Josh !The trip on Cobia was just perfect. We surfed everyday, most sessions there was just us as there was no other boat around. Well, maybe not just us as there were manta rays, turtles and dolphins as well! Fun waves, with some bigger days (range from shoulder high to solid overhead, even one double overhead session). Best session was at Tucky Joe's, perfect, empty & barreling (see attached photo). The crew was the best, apparently Marty is really the best surf guide in Maldives, and the Chef was great like the rest of the crew. The boat is a bit slow but that wasn't a problem as it allowed to enjoy the cruise and beautiful landscape. The other Aussie guests were very nice people and they shared waves with me, the landlocked Swiss surfer. I could make a lot of progress in terms of surfing. And we were only 6 guests instead of 12 (max capacity) so plenty of room and good vibe on board. In the end of the trip we went back to North Male where I met Brian from perfectwave @ Cokes surf camp. Even the waves in North Male (Sultans, Jails, etc) were not that crowded.Like I said it was a perfect trip and will do it again in the future, for sure.Cheers

The Cobia was a great boat with a great crew. The waves we encountered were great. We surfed everyday and had a lot of days just to ourselves. Would definitely be coming back to the maldives.

Waking up on our boat in the Maldives is hardly what you would call 'roughing it'. Eager as can be, we were all up well before the sun and heading out for our first surf. Our crew was the first out on a pretty decent right hand reef break and everyone enjoyed some fun waves before breakfast. We are lucky enough on this trip to be accompanied by one of the best surf guides in the business. While filling our bodies with food he checked all the charts and decided to head a little further afield. His knowledge of the area proving to be spot on when he delivered us to a fast, hollow left with no one else aroundâ. What was meant to be a lunchtime surf turned into an all afternoon marathon session with the crew on the boat bring us a soft drink in the line-up! As I said, surfing here is hardly what you would call â€roughing it…’

We stayed on the Cobia for 12 nights awesome trip scored waves from 3-6ft the whole trip and the crowds were very low, surfed a number of times with only the boys on our boat, how good is that. As for the fishing second to none G.T 18kg, Bluefin 12kg, red coral grouper 15kg, Wahoo 24kg, travelly 10kg and then there was about a dozen or more small fish from 5-7kg.As for the crew could not find a better bunch of guys, whatever you need they will get and do, the boat was spacious and very comfortable. We've booked again for 2010
