The Kiriya Ryokan can be described as one of the most traditional Japanese accommodation providers in all of the Nozawa Onsen. Situated in the one of the most historic parts of the Nozawa Onsen village it is best suited to guests looking for peace and tranquillity as opposed to late night partying. The hotel’s 11:00pm curfew ensures that all guests have a peaceful and relaxing skiing vacation.

The hotel provides guests with a choice of traditional Japanese or western styled rooms. The Japanese styled rooms contain traditional Japanese futons whereas the western styled rooms provide guests with single western styled beds. Each room contains its own western styled toilet and a communal bathroom is available with western styled showers.

Guests also have access to the hotel’s hot spring water onsen which is segregated for male and female guests. The onsen provides guests with an ideal opportunity to rest and unwind after a long day on the ski slopes. The rich mineral deposits within the natural spring water are known for their soothing effect on sore muscles for skiers.

The hotel also has its own restaurant that provides guests with a free daily breakfast and serves dinner each evening for an additional fee. Dinner consists of an elaborate Kaiseki meal that includes a five course meal of local and regional cuisines.

Guests can conveniently access the local ski fields using the “Yu-road” which is a moving walkway which takes guests directly to the main gondola. With over 36 ski runs, a half pipe and a children’s snow park guests will be sure to find skiing or snowboarding to suit their level of competence. Mount Kenashiyama ski resort has over 297 hectares of designated ski slopes and a vertical peak that extends 1,650 metres. The resort is ranked as the best ski location in the area due to its size and snow depth. The ski season runs between December and May each year.

Accommodation

Being a traditional Ryokan, the Kiriya provides guests with a personalised service and an atmosphere which could be considered more like a western Bed and Breakfast than a hotel. Many Japanese guests enjoy staying at the Kiriya Ryokan because it provides them with traditional comforts such as the traditional styled rooms.

There are four room types for guests to choose from providing the following options:

The Japanese Family Room

The room provides a main room with 10 traditional tatami mats and a smaller room with 4 tatami mats. The Japanese Family Room sleeps up to 5 people in comfort and provides guests with the following facilities:

  • Air conditioning;

  • Television;

  • A safe box;

  • A bathroom that contains a western style toilet and sink;

  • Telephone; and

  • A yukata towel for each guest.



The Japanese Western Room

The main room contains a twin bed with 4 tatami mats in the smaller walk in room. The Japanese Western Room comfortably sleeps up to 3 people and provides guests with the following facilities:

  • Air conditioning;

  • Television;

  • A safe box;

  • A bathroom that contains a western style toilet and sink;

  • Telephone; and

  • A yukata towel for each guest.

The Traditional Japanese Room

The Traditional Japanese Room is a favourite with Japanese guests wanting to experience traditional Japanese accommodation. The main room provides guests with 8 tatami mats with the smaller adjoining room providing 4 tatami mats. The Traditional Japanese Room comfortably sleeps up to 4 people and provides guests with the following facilities:

  • Air conditioning;

  • Television;

  • A safe box;

  • A bathroom that contains a western style toilet and sink;

  • Telephone; and

  • A yukata towel for each guest.

The Japanese Standard Room

The Japanese Standard Room provides guests with 10 tatami mats and comfortably sleeps up to 5 people. It is the most popular room style for families looking for budget accommodation while still experiencing the quality of a traditional Ryokan. Each room provides guests with the following facilities:

  • Air conditioning;

  • Television;

  • A safe box;

  • A bathroom that contains a western style toilet and sink;

  • Telephone; and

  • A yukata towel for each guest.

Dining:

The Kiriya Ryokan hosts a traditional Japanese style restaurant which features traditional Japanese tables and floor seating. It is considered to be one of the most sought after traditional restaurants within the Nozawa Onsen.

For dinner the Kiriya Ryokan provides guests with a Kaiseki which is traditional Japanese cuisine consisting of 5 courses. The Kaiseki consists of cold courses and a variety of hot courses which are cooked at your table. By enjoying the local sake with their dinner guests have the opportunity to experience traditional Kiriya cuisine which steeped in history.

Brakfast is provided to all guests free of charge and consists of both Japanese and western cuisines. Breakfast is served as a buffet allowing guests to choose the foods that they would like to eat before setting for a day of skiing.

The Kiriya Ryokan is situated in close proximity to the local village so guests also have the option of walking down to the village and experiencing the local restaurants which serve a wide variety of Japanese and western cuisines. Whether guests are looking for 5 star dining or a meal on a budget there is something for everyone. Many guests enjoy the traditional pork buns that local street vendors serve on the main pedestrian street of the village.

Surf & Other Activities

Skiing

Unlike other skiing locations in Japan, Nozawa Onsen is only made up of one ski resort. The resort provides guests with over 300 hectares of terrain and 50 kilometres of ski slopes. With a breathtaking 1085 metre vertical drop Nozawa Onsen is a popular skiing destination for skiers from all over the world. There is an equal distribution of ski runs to ensure there is an appropriate run for beginners through to the most advanced skiers.

Nozawa Onsen is located close to the Sea of Japan which assists in generating more than 10 metres of snow during the snow season. This makes it one of the most sought out ski locations in all of Japan. With wide groomed run and more than its fair share of mogul runs there is a run to suit every skiers desire.

Guided Snow Monkey Tour

Nozawa Onsen is famous for its Macaque Monkeys, locally called Snow Monkeys. Guests can enjoy guided tours that will take you to Jigokudani which transalated into English means “Hell’s Valley”. Here guests will be able to come face to face with the local Snow Monkeys relaxing in natural hot spring water baths and playing on rock cliffs and branches. The Snow Monkeys are friendly and are not afraid of human interaction.

The Village of Shibu Onsen

For guests looking to explore the history of old world Japan then the village of Shibu Onsen is a place to visit. The coble stone streets and historical Japanese buildings that are over 400 years old were once home to local Samurai warriors. The village of Shibu Onsen will allow guests to witness an insight into ancient Japanese history. With the large concentration of onsens providing good fortune to those who bathe in the village onsens makes the village a popular destination for tourists from around the world.
