Surf & Other Activities
Romans Beach Hotel is located right on the beach on the south side of Hikkaduwa, far enough away from the main strip but close enough to be able to walk to the main break. Hikkaduwa is the most popular spot for surfing in Sri Lanka. Wave size ranges from about 2-6 feet. The best season for waves in this are is during the dry season from November to March.
There are 4 main breaks along this stretch of coast breaking on sand
and reef. Further north there's a great left-hander just opposite the
Poseidon Dive Centre - Coral bottom. A fast left wave that breaks over a very sharp reef and with shallow water. Only surf here if you really know what you are doing and at your own risk.
Main Reef. Coral bottom. Right and left waves that offer fun and relaxed surfing.
Inside Reef. Coral bottom. Breaking fast hollow waves from left and right that can be quite intense at times.
Beach Break. Sand bottom. South of the inside Reef there is a number of thin sand over which several types of waves break. This area is recommended for the inexperienced surfer.
Galle fort maritime museum
A famous attraction being the Galle fort, tours to the Galle maritime museum are very popular in this area. The museum features many ancient artefacts recovered from shipwrecks along the coast, flora and fauna found in the sea, whale and shark structured bones and more. Its many items on display hold interesting tales of ancient times, which couldn’t be better related to you than by the museum tour guides.
Hikkaduwa is one of the top towns along the Southwest coast for diving. The clear and shallow waters closer to the shore make it ideal even for the beginner. The most intricate formations of coral and remarkable marine life are found further offshore for diving enthusiasts. Four shipwrecks along the coastline add to the sights to explore on an entertaining diving expedition.
Elephant safaris in Sri Lanka, are very popular among tourists and locals. Accompanied by a mahout who travels beside the animal, couples or even groups of four can ride atop an elephant along the beach and enjoy the scenery from a completely different angle. A ride on elephant back along the golden shores, with the wind in your face and the spray of the ocean moistening your skin, is a truly unique experience.
Deep Sea fishing or simply fishing for sport, you can find the essential equipment to do both along the coast of this little town. Speed boats and high power boats are available to rent out for a day of fishing. Fishing in these waters is a real pleasure, and if you’re lucky you could find yourself with a good catch.

We had a brilliant holiday in Sri Lanka. It was amazing. The Fortress and Roman's were both great. Very different hotels and beach locations but Marc got good surf at both so he was happy. The food was incredible, particularly at Romans. I have no idea who was cooking, however the breakfasts and dinners were delicious. Plus one of the guys at The Fortress also organised us a lovely hotel for the two nights we were unable to secure during that crazy Friday. It was so easy and everyone was very helpful.
Thank you also. It was very fraught trying to organize everything and the issues at HSBC didn't help. Sods law we call it in the UK.
Thanks and hope that you're getting some good waves in NZ.
