Summary

Nagomi-tei offers great soba noodles downstairs, and comfortable accommodation upstairs. They only have four guestrooms, so it's worth booking in advance. All rooms come with western beds, but also include Japanese features like tatami mats. Don’t expect too much space, though it’s not too bad by Japanese standards. The owners are also pretty helpful. Between cooking up mountains of noodles for their hungry guests, they’re also pretty familiar with the local skiing scene, and can give you some decent advice. However, the main perk of crashing above a noodle bar is the price, and also the fact that you’ll never be at a loss for where to eat. Just wake up, and smell the soba in the morning!

Quick Facts
    • Central location
    • Combination Japanese/ western rooms
    • Good deals for booking ahead
    • Tasty noodles

Arriving for the first time at Nagomi-tei, it's easy to think you're at the wrong place. Where the hotel is supposed to be, there's just a noodle bar! Downstairs, Nagomi-tei is indeed a bustling noodle bar, while four guestrooms are located upstairs. It might seem like an odd combination at first, though the owners have put serious effort into making it work. The rooms are surprisingly spacious, and furnished with a combination of Japanese and western amenities. For a budget choice, you get some decent bang for your buck. There are large, western style beds in rooms with tatami mats – the traditional woven flooring common in homes across Japan. It's certainly appealing to have some Japanese aesthetics combined with western comforts.

Naturally, if you like noodles, you'll love Nagomi-tei. Downstairs, they cook up a great bowl of soba, which are filling buckwheat noodles beloved across the country. It's certainly quite convenient to be able to pop downstairs and grab a decent meal.

Nagomi-tei's convenience factor doesn't end there. The location is also pretty good, near the center of Hakuba village. Shuttle buses for Hakuba's eight ski areas depart from a stop not far from Nagomi-tei, and there's plenty of other restaurants, bars and cafes in the streets nearby the hotel. Overall, visitors looking for a high class, luxury experience might not appreciate crashing above a noodle bar; but for the rest of us, this place certainly has its charms.

Accommodation

Nagomi-tei has four rooms on offer on the upper floor. All rooms are furnished in the Wayoshitsu style – a term used in Japan to refer to rooms with both western and Japanese features. This means you can expect a standard, raised bed, but still have classic tatami mats and space for drinking tea.

All rooms also come with ensuite bathrooms, though the jacuzzi is in a common area. For Japanese style accommodation, it's actually quite spacious, and certainly very clean and comfortable. There's also a common lounge area, with enough space to relax after a day on the slopes. Plus, they've even managed to cram in a drying room, which is a big must for any hotel catering towards winter sportspeople.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning the restaurant downstairs. They specialize primarily in serving soba noodles. These noodles are made from buckwheat, and are extremely popular across Japan. It's hard to beat a steaming hot bowl of soba.

A full list of the hotel's facilities and services includes:

Surf & Other Activities

If you're in Hakuba, chances are you're here to ski. This is one of Japan's best skiing regions, with eight world class ski areas around the village. The region sees long seasons, and is famous for its brilliant powder snow. Although it'll mostly be advanced skiers that get the most out of the powder, the fact is almost anyone can enjoy the slopes here. There are runs suitable for all skill levels, and Hakuba is brimming with ski schools offering to teach the basics.

In the summer months, Hakuba offers some good outdoor activities, such as hiking and cycling. Turns out, those mountains are just as with with snow, and without.

Finally, it's also worth checking out the hot springs while you're visiting Hakuba. The area is known for some great hot springs, some of which locals say can have health benefits. They're certainly a great way to wind down after a day in the mountains. There's hot springs just a few blocks from the hotel, be sure to ask the staff for directions.
