Summary

Traumerei combines French and Japanese elements to create a unique hotel with some of Hakuba's best cuisine on offer. Located in the convenient Echoland area of Hakuba, they have a pretty awesome location. While being easily accessible with public transport and close to bars and restaurants, Traumerei is nonetheless secluded enough to give visitors some decent peace and quiet. The hotel’s grounds are pleasant in the summer months, but become nothing short of a snowy wonderland in winter. Throw in the enthusiastic hospitality of the owners, and you’ve got an amazing winter retreat you won’t want to leave.

Quick Facts
    •  Impressive French aesthetic
    • Great location
    •  Even better food!

If you're looking for the classic auberge experience in Hakuba, Japan, then Traumerei is hard to turn up. This impressive hotel in Echoland certainly looks the part, with its bold architecture and pristine woodland surroundings. Inside, it gets even better, with classic European aesthetic at every corner. The attention to detail is what really makes this place stand out, and no nook or cranny has been neglected. However, the biggest draw card of this hotel has to be its restaurant, which serves up some of the best classic French cuisine anywhere in Hakuba, and arguably anywhere in Japan.

Traumerei's other major asset is its location. Huddled in Echoland, it's perfect for pretty much anyone hoping to spend plenty of time on the snow. This part of Hakuba has the village's best transport connections, with regular shuttles to all of the region's major ski areas. It's also perfect for apres ski, with numerous bars, restaurants and everything else you'll need within easy walking distance. However, it's pretty hard to understand why anyone staying at Traumerei would want to eat out, when the perfect restaurant is already on site!

On top of this, they also have a pretty decent on site hot spring, plus all the amenities you'd expect from a lodge of this standard. Plus, the owners are absolutely lovable

Accommodation

Traumerei features one standard room type, which can sleep up to three people. The rooms aren't the largest in town, but they're certainly not cramped, at least by Japanese standards. The beds are pretty big though. They also come with all the standard features, including a fridge and kettle.

The main attraction here is the restaurant, which is overseen by a Michelin Star chef. The eight course French dinner is above and beyond what you'd expect, and easily the high point of the stay. They also have an impressive wine collection, the likes of which you're unlikely to find anywhere else in Hakuba. Traumerei also includes breakfasts, which generally feature croissants with tea or coffee. It's not quite the banquet they offer for dinner, but it's perfectly fine for anyone who doesn't like the idea of overeating before hitting the slopes. These meals are generally included in the room price, which makes the whole affair feel like surprisingly good value overall.

Speaking of skiing, Traumerei knows is clientele well, and is well equipped for winter sportspeople. There's a decent heating room and equipment storage. They also have an on site hot spring, known in Japan as onsen. It's the perfect way to wind down after a day of skiing. The onsen does need to be booked in advance, and it's best to do so as soon as you arrive to avoid disappointment.

Their full list of amenities and services includes:

- Ski storage

- Hot spring bath

- Open-air bath

- Restaurant

- Bar

- Breakfast in the room

- Luggage storage

- Shared lounge/TV area

- Daily maid service

- Newspapers

- Non-smoking rooms

Surf & Other Activities

If you're in Hakuba, you're probably here to do some serious skiing. From Echoland, there's regular shuttles to all of the region's ski areas. The staff at Traumerei know the area like the backs of their hands, and can offer plenty of information on how to get to the slopes.

Out of skiing season, Hakuba offers some of Japan's best hiking, with numerous mountain trails winding their way through the countryside. There's also plenty of other outdoor activities available, such as cycling and canoeing. Around town, there's a handful of museums, and a few other cultural attractions. The biggest by far is Hakuba's onsen culture. Locals say hot springs offer all kinds of health benefits. Either way, they're a delightful treat in Hakuba's chilly winters.
