Surf & Other Activities
(Frigates) is a world class, powerful left-hand reef break and is about
30 minutes away from Royal Davui Island by boat. Frigates can hold up
to a solid three times head height and rarely does it drops below
head-high. Good rides of 100 meters or more are not uncommon.
With the prevailing south easterly trade winds that blow offshore and its exposed position to southern ocean swell, Frigate Passage is one of the most consistent surf spots not only in Fiji, but the whole of the South Pacific. Offshore in any easterly quarter wind, Frigate Passage breaks in any southerly quarter swell, and breaks well through all tides.
If the conditions are not right for Frigates, or you prefer something not so big, the other Viti Levu breaks just off from the mainland are also only about 30 minutes by boat away.
- J’s – J’s is a hollow, fast wave that breaks from 2’ to 6’. It’s best around the high tide with winds from NE to W. It needs some west in the swell to run down the reef.
- Shifties – This wave has a deep water take off making the break a ‘not too threatening’ ride. This outside point of the barrier reef picks up all the swell and can be double the size of J’s and Vunaniu. It is powerful and thick. When everywhere else is flat, you can almost guarantee a 4-foot wave at Shifties. It can be surfed at all tides. Again, a wind of the north quadrant is needed.
- Vunaniu – Vananiu is a short wedging right which has a bowl section at the end, usually smaller than other breaks. This would be a good option for the kids. It does get good. It’s best at high tide
Access to the breaks are by way of a chartered boat that can be organised at your request. A 3 hour boat charter is about FJD280 and includes a guide. The boat can hold up to 4 surfers. If you have more surfers in your group - just give us enough advance warning and we will get the resort to arrange to have access to a larger transfer boat for your stay.
Royal Davui Island Resort’s Marine Sanctuary offers some excellent scuba diving opportunities, and with over 25 dive sites within 25 mins of the island, divers are spoilt for choice. You will find many of these are easily accessible right from the beach.
Located just 20 meters from the jetty is Davui’s own shipwreck waiting to be explored.
Divers can choose from wall, soft coral, cave or open water sites. All are accessible to new divers.
For the more adventurous and experienced divers there is the open ocean dive at a reef called Cakaulekaleka (tha-cow-leka-leka),which is a panicle thrusting up from the depths in the middle of open ocean.
If you’d like a bigger adrenalin rush then why not try the “big fish encounter”. Not for the faint of heart you’ll dive off the northern edge of the lagoon. Seasoned shark wranglers and feeders will be hand feeding tiger, bull and reef sharks right in front of you while you kick back and enjoy the show.
Pure Fiji brings you the ultimate in ancient traditions for today's natural body care.
Famous for their beauty the Pacific Islanders discovered long ago the power of particular exotic nuts in cleansing, softening and protecting their skin and hair.
Exotic nut and floral extracts blended with fresh coconut milk and virgin coconut oil to hydrate, condition and protect your skin are used in their many treatments.

OMG! This is one of the most stunning places I have ever been to, and I have been to more than you could ever imagine! It's an adults only retreat, catering to couples and honeymooners and they are happy to comply with your every whim. We arrived by private charter plane which connected with a boat transfer nad when we arrived on the island all the staff came out to the jetty to sing a welcome song for us. After a welcome drink and tour of the facilities, we were shown to our room. I was completey astounded at how beatuiful it was. A massive luxuriously furnished bungalow in keeping with the local style and a balcony that wraps around the whole front of the lounge & bedroom to give you a 180 degree view of water. The bungalows are all seperated around the island to ensure absolute privacy. Best thing was a heated jacuzzi plunge pool on the balcony! Awesome! The bathroom also had a double spa bath - so no lack of bubbles. The little touches make all the difference as well, complimentary homemade cookies in your minibar, replenished during your stay....little notes on your pillow each night outlining the activities and menu choices for the following day.....and all the staff remembering your names. The Sand Spit excursion is a MUST. They take you out on the boat and drop you off literally in the middle of the ocean on a small strip of pure white sand which magically appears each day when the tide goes out. You are left there with an unbrella, mobile phone for emergency or if you get bored (as if!), and an esky with your lunch and beers or champagne! You are on your own private island with no one around for miles! The watersports guys are brillant - and nothing is too much trouble. Surfing, diving, snorkelling, village visits...each one a remarkable experience. Frigates is nearby - a worldclass left that regularly goes double overhead or you can go to the easier breaks near the mainland. The diving is also worldclass - with a nearby marine research centre giving certified divers the chance to dive with them while they feed and study the local Tiger and Bull sharks! Or if you just want to snorkel - there's reef surrounding the entire island that easily rivals what you'll find at the Great Barrier Reef - and it's just steps away from the beach. In our first 5 minutes snorkelling we saw a black tip reef shark and a baby sting ray! The coral is alive and colourful, and there are HUNDREDS of different kinds of fish. One day we even had a couple of baby black tip reef sharks come up over the coral reef at high tide and swim around our legs - it was very cool! Now I haven't even mentioned the food - meals are all included. Choice of about 10 different options for breakfast each day. Lunch is 2 courses- and you can choose between 2 entree items, and 2 main items. Dinner is 3 course and similarly you choose between a couple of items for each course. They are happy to comply to any requests for fussy eaters but I found everything offered was beautifully fresh and amazingly tasty. Every meal was a fine dining experience. Before dinner everyone meets at the bar for sunset happy hour - a good chance to meet the other guests - and complimentary canapes are offerred. You certainly don't go hungry here!Overall, I would not hestitate to recommend this resort and would go back in a heartbeat.
