One of Fiji’s newest, this surf resort was specifically built for discerning travelers who want surf, seclusion, service and satisfaction. Matanivusi Surf Resort Fiji is the ideal getaway with some of the best surf in Fiji just across the lagoon from the resort.
While surfers can easily access world-class waves, non-surfers can relax, go on boat trips, snorkelling, SUP or kayak adventures or do yoga (subject to yoga teacher availability).
Nestled between the white sandy beach and a meandering creek, the resort has been developed to protect its amazing location. Enjoy the rich unique environment at eco friendly Matanivusi. Matanivusi Surf Resort, situated on the Coral Coast on the main island of Fiji, Viti Levu, is the ideal place to get away from it all.
Ask us about the Exclusive Whole Resort Charter and enjoy the features of Matanivusi exclusively for you and your friends. Invite as few as you want, however the maximum is 16 guests.
Matanivusi Surf Resort has been designed by award-winning Architect, Paul Uhlmann - a surfer from the Gold Coast, Australia. The accommodation has been designed to achieve the integration of the natural landscape with the living area. There are large amounts of glass and louvres that allow the cool sea breezes to ventilate the units. Ceiling fans, ensuite bathrooms and a large deck area are features that make the simple designs a pleasure to stay in.
The 6 accommodation bures are tucked between a creek at the rear of the
building and coconut palms, exotic flowers and plants at the front, then
the beach. If you are there at the right time, you will be able to
pluck a ripe paw paw from the tree near your bure. A large variety of
fruit trees are scattered around the resort.
Each bure is divided into 2 separate accommodation areas with their own ensuite. The room is tastefully furnished with a king size bed (or 2 king singles), mosquito net for that tropical feel, a coffee table and relaxing chairs. All rooms are screened. The large deck and vast expanses of glass gives each unit breathtaking views of the beach and rainforest, even from the toilet!
Matanivusi is Stoke Certified based on their sustainability practices: This means that their environmental, cultural heritage, social and economic impacts have been audited and have passed a strict set of criteria.
There is Wi-Fi connection at the resort, however it is only available within the main restaurant building. As it is a remote area, the internet is a bit slow therefore it is requested to only use it for emails. If you need to download music or books, this should be done before you arrive at the Resort.
Surf & Other Activities
- J’s – J’s is a hollow, fast wave that breaks from 2’ to 6’. It’s best around the high tide with winds from NE to W. It needs some west in the swell to run down the reef.
- Shifties – This wave has a deep water take off making the break a ‘not too threatening’ ride. This outside point of the barrier reef picks up all the swell and can be double the size of J’s and Vunaniu. It is powerful and thick. When everywhere else is flat, you can almost guarantee a 4-foot wave at Shifties. It can be surfed at all tides. Again, a wind of the north quadrant is needed.
- Vunaniu – Vananiu is a short wedging right which has a bowl section at the end, usually smaller than other breaks. This would be a good option for the kids. It does get good. It’s best at high tide.
- Frigates - Definitely a world-class left that can rival Cloudbreak for power, size and consistency. Because of the gradual tapering of the reef, it can handle all swell sizes. The SE trade winds are offshore, so when the inside waves near Matanivusi are blown out, there is always the consistent Frigates. Because it’s out in the ocean, about 20 kilometres from Matanivusi, it picks up all swell.
The resort has been planned as an eco-resort. The principles being to make as little impact as possible during construction, implement best sustainable operating practices and integration with the local Fijian villagers.
Minimal clearing was done to allow for the main building and the 6 bures, nestled just metres from the sandy beach the buildings are a metre above ground level. Using post and beam construction there has been minimal disturbance to the area. The native vegetation along the beachfront has been maintained and new plantings will protect the beach from any erosion & rising storm surges. There is also a natural rock platform that acts as a buffer to trap the sand on the beach.
- Water conservation. The resort collects rainwater in tanks for use throughout.
- Recycling programs ensure that all waste is sorted and disposed of through commercial contractors.
- Educational programs for the local primary and secondary schools.
Kick off your shoes as you won’t need them on the above ground walkways from your bure to the restaurant/games area and you definitely won’t need them to walk the few steps to your beach lounging area.
- Snorkel in the crystal-clear lagoon
- Fish for trevally, mahi mahi, mackerel, tuna...
- Relax on the white sand beach or in a hammock.
- Enjoy sunset with appetizers and Happy Hour.
- Feast on delicious fresh food prepared by their chef.
- Experience the culture of Fiji at Vunaniu Village.

Good Morning Sylvia ,
Matanavusi is a place which you would go to again and again for a family and loving atmosphere with beautiful staff always ready to smile and have a laugh with you , we totally relaxed while there which is what we needed , the food was exceptional, very well prepared and presented with a choice of vegetarian or protein , local delights in all the available fruit picked on the resort daily , a bar always open with every beverage you desire ( your choice) , the hut was well designed with full ocean views , a back decking to relax and read or sit and talk , access to the beach and walks, a natural rainforest sits amongst the resort where you can walk along the high decking to breathe in the nature and the glorious trees which have been there for centuries, just amazing to see and touch , we had a really lovely time there . I liked the fact that this is not commercial, family friendly , it gives back to the local village and everything is sustainable.
So a big Thank you for recommending Matanavusi Resort ,
Craig (September 2016)
The knowledge about the resort that we visited was extremely helpful, as we chose a place that offered peaceful surrounds and all the activities we could ask for. The staff at the resort were phenomenally friendly, helpful and accommodating. The surfing was the daily highlight and a better place we could not have asked for.

This was my first overseas surf trip and had an absolutely fantastic time. Great surf guide, great venue and extremely well organised. Can't wait for my next trip!

For surfers wanting to ensure their partner enjoys the holiday, then Matanivusi Resort "ticks all the boxes". The Fijian staff go out of their way to ensure activities and service make the stay of all an exercise in relaxation and enjoyment.
I got to surf some great waves, and my wife enjoyed paddle boarding, snorkeling and touring with staff who went out of their way to ensure all guests were made to enjoy the experience.
Great work Brian, Donna and all their staff at Matanivusi!

Matanivusi has it all going for it. Beautiful location, staff that make you part of the family, spacious and peaceful bedrooms. Delicious food, scenic walks, kayaking, snorkelling, paddleboarding, beach volleyball, oh and some world class surf breaks on the doorstep!
Lucy (September 2014)
From the first contact Sylv was fantastic - very friendly and professional plus we shared a common thread as our wedding anniversaries were on the same day and many other little coincidences! Sylvia steered us in the right direction to the Matanivusi Resort. It was a perfect way to celebrate our 25th Wedding anniversary. It was time out from our very busy lives and from the moment we arrived we felt at home. Our hosts were lovely and we felt like we entered into a large family unit. Brian and Donna were great like minded people who do anything to make your stay memorable. Just loved it - the only thing that nobody can control was the weather which was very windy and squally for the first few days but luckily that settled down. I would definitely use the Perfect Wave again for our travel arrangements as I couldn't fault them!

Our trip to Matanivusi Surf Resort in Fiji was fantastic. Kim from The Perfect Wave recommended it to us and organised everything, including transfers from another island where we had previously been staying. It was all really easy! The resort was fantastic with great surf guides and staff, beautiful accommodation nestled into the rainforest, and lots of non-surfing related activities available. We would highly recommend The Perfect Wave to other people looking for a great surf holiday
Jacqui (September 2012)
We had a great stay and fun surf for most of it the Matanivusi resort was lovely and the staff and owners were so welcoming and helpful. We felt like we were in a home not a resort which our kids loved.Donna Brian and Tony were so accommodating and nothing was a problem for them. We surfed daily and Brian was very good at organizing us to breaks that suited the whole family so we were often together in the water except for 1 day where we let the kids sleep in. The kitchen staff were great as I have a gluten free diet and all my meals were prepared slightly differently to everyone else which was really nice of them. My daughter is a learner surfer and it was so nice that our surf guide Lissey spent time with her getting her on waves and encouraging her. Its not easy being a learner surfer but she did well under the circumstances. The Fijian staff were just so lovely and friendly. We will definitely go back to Fiji for a family surf holiday and stay at Matanivusi- it was such a nice place to have a surf holiday

Hi MarieJust a quick note to let you know that our holiday at Matanavusi Surf eco resort was soooo amazing!!We loved Fiji...Leigh got really good waves every day which kept a smile on his face!! I went "stand up paddle boarding" in the coral lagoon out the front of the resort which was really fun and easy to do, and perfect for viewing the fish / coral down below. Brian and Donna, the owners are great!!! The kids (2.5 years and 5 months) were well catered for...my youngest had food cooked and pureed each day, there was a portacot, bath and car seat for her and whenever I wanted to just chill for an hour or go snorkelling, babysitting was always available. The kitchen staff were very flexible and would do food at whatever time we wanted the kids to eat, which was very handy!! I am really glad that we chose Matanavusi over some of the "bigger resort" places...as this place was much more our style. Small and personal - all guests sat down communally at dinner each night which was great to speak to different people about their travel/life stories. Staff were very friendly , and the rooms were really tranquil and so well designed for the environment there, with a rainforest backdrop and pool overlooking a lovely beach. Leigh also did the trip to Frigates one day and got really good uncrowded waves..... plus Brian (the owner) was taking photos each day Leigh/other guests surfed so that we had the option to buy a disc of photos at the end of the trip which was great!. (attached one...ha ha)So all in all I recommend this place big time! We plan to go back next year....thanks again for suggesting Matanavusi....

Matanivusi - Fiji We had a fantastic time at Matanivusi! The highlight being the relaxed, ultra friendly staff, the standard of the facilities and the perfect location. We were also stoked with sunset snacks and cocktails and the great bar area.It was so nice to have such flexibility with activities and meals – especially for the kids, who were so well catered for and looked after.Donna and Brian were fantastic hosts and quickly made us feel like friends rather than customers. Matt says that Brian was helpful out in the surf with wave selection and local knowledge. So as you can see we rated the resort highly and would definitely recommend it.Thanks for sorting us out with this holiday – we loved it!
