Surf & Other Activities

Lomani has joined forces with local company Surfin’ Fiji to offer daily transfers to Fiji’s most famous surf breaks. The breaks, including the world famous Cloudbreak, are located only 20 minutes by boat from Lomani. They have been the venue for numerous professional surfing competitions, including the prestigious Billabong Pro Surf and Roxy Pro Surf competitions.

Surfin’ Fiji are offering daily transfers to Namotu and Wilkes breaks for FJD$50 per person, and Cloudbreak and Desperations for FJD$70 per person. The price includes return transfers to the surf, 3 hours of surfing time and safety support. Surf board hire is also available from FJD$40 per day.

Surfing has enjoyed a new resurgence in Fiji since the July 2010 release of the Surfing Areas Decree, which gives surfers unrestricted access to any surfing area in Fiji.

Mamanuca Islands Breaks

  • Wilkes Passage - This fun right-hander is great for most levels of surfers & is best at mid to high tide. Like most of the breaks in the area, it works best with S - SW swell. The only access is by boat. Unfortunately, it is very exposed and prone to being blown out by the prevailing trade winds. Afternoon glass-offs, though rare, can be a truly wonderous sight as clean right hand barrels peel off mechanically into the safety of the deep channel.
  • Desperations - A classic wave that doesn't really work until its 4-5ft but just keeps getting better the bigger it gets. A left and a right with length, speed and nice hollow sections.
  • Namotu Left - A left that breaks all year round, best from October to April with lighter winds. When its under 6 ft, it will even suit longboards, but becomes very challenging over 6 ft. Namotu itself is a quality wave, but remember to kick off at the end of your ride - don’t fall into the trap of going for that final barrel section - no one gets out of it.
  • Cloudbreak - The world famous WCT location is one of the best lefts in the world. With the new laws prohibiting the exclusivity of surf breaks, you can now surf this awesome waves any day you want. This is a serious wave though, and will definitely sort the crowds out when it gets over 6ft.
  • Mini Cloudbreak  - Powerful, fast wave. The best wind direction is south-east. Best around high tide.
  • Lighthouse – South of mini-cloudbreak, near the lighthouse. Unfortunately, this one rarely breaks, but when it does, it’s for pros or kamikazes only.  Hollow, fast and powerful with a right and a left.
  • Restaurants – This is a good, fast left hand reef break for pros or kamikazes only. However, with the new laws prohibiting the exclusivity of surf breaks you can now surf this awesome waves any day you want.

Other Activities:

Complimentary activities include sea-kayaking, daily outer-reef snorkelling, hobie cat sailing, windsurfing, fishing, cooking lessons and Fijian cultural lessons. Lomani also has its own 35m freshwater swimming pool, fitness centre, free bicycles and is in close proximity to a 32 par 9 hole golf course. Beginners welcome, lessons provided for all Lomani activities.

During your holiday, why not play a round on the nearby 9-hole golf course designed and built by the winner of the Nadi Open 1996 Ananda Madhwan.

• Open-air bar set in 20 acres of landscaped gardens
• Operational all daylight hours
• 20 half sets of quality golf clubs (with cart)
• Left handed clubs available
• Playing time approximately 1 hour 20 minutes

Dive Sites

Coral Gardens

Coral Gardens is a peninsula, which juts out into the northern Wilkes Passage off Namotu Island. Fish life is equal to that found in the Red Sea. Heavy schools of giant barracuda, pairs of Spanish mackerel, manta ray and hammerhead sharks roam freely here.

Richard’s Canyons

Surrounding Namotu Island is a two square mile reef. Numerous tunicates, crinoid and sea fans dot the diagonal canyons which cut Nomotu Island fringe reef like the spokes of a vast wheel. Offshore from the island the continental shelf deepens to 3000 feet and out of this shallow abyss swim manta ray, giant silver jacks, enormous mackerel and tuna.

Namotu Cave

On the south side of the island in Wilkes Passage is an archway and cave at a depth of 45 feet. Elegant gorgonian fans and zoanthid colonies dot the entrance to the Cave. Offshore from the Cave are deep, 80foot coral outcropping’s through, which swim schools of barracuda and Spanish mackerel.

The Pinnacle

This unique bombie stands 50 feet tall in 80 feet of water. It is inhabited by a large moray eel and black coral tree. Another, smaller grotto penetrates the Pinnacle 35 feet beneath the surface and is full of clouds of chromis fish and soft pink and purple coral.
Plantation Point

This brilliantly coloured coral patch has a windward edge profusely decorated with rugose and velvet leather corals mixed with tunicate colonies and numbers of brain coral heads with Christmas tree worms. Coral colonies extend from ten feet beneath the surface to 60 feet.
The Japanese Cavern

Tavarua Island is to the south of Namotu and directly across Malolo Passage. Beyond the waves of ‘breaking cloud’, is an unusual cave at 55 feet below the surface. Inside are brilliant pink soft corals and swaying gorgonian fans. Following the swim through is a tour of the decorative Tavarua wall with sea whips, tan lettuce leaf and sharp hilled brain corals.
Whale Shark Wall

This shear 200foot wall is named after a 40foot whale shark. Porcelain coral, ornate clownfish, sea anemones, arrow crabs and thousands of Christmas tree worms dot the seascape. There are large numbers of regal slipper lobsters, cup corals and scrolled filefish.
The ‘Big W’ Caves

Named for the unusual ‘W’ shape formation in the nine-mile long Malolo Barrier Reef, these unusual caves number three and all are within 200 meters of each other. Found inside the caves are multitudes of soft pink and purple coral lobsters and fish that avoid bright sunlight. This is one of the most unique night diving sites in the world.
Mamanuca Wall

This 150-foot wall is indented with numerous canyons where sleeping sharks abound in large but shallow caves. Tours in and out of these byways can take 40-50 min but because of many serpentine turns and twists, the diver rarely proceeds further than one quarter of a mile from the dive boat.
The Megabombies

About two miles north of the Japanese Cavern on the edge of Viti Levu Island’s continental shelf are 30 or more thin bombies narrowly separated from each other by 6-10 foot canyons through which divers swim with limestone caves and unusually shaped overhead archways.
Night Dive

Only a 10min boatride from Plantation lies Namotu, one of Fiji’s best night dive spots. Well known for it’s aquatic life, it gives our divers an insight of the underwater nightlife, from the colourful soft coral to the different varieties of sea creatures. Depth – 12-18m with visibility up to 20m. Qualifications-Advanced/Night Dives speciality or higher. With torches and guide.
Shark Feeding Dive

One of its kind!!! Only half an hour boat ride away, and a nine meter dive, one can only watch with sheer adrenaline how ‘Api’ – Fiji’s famous shark feeder – plays, hand feeds and even ‘rides’ the sharks. An experience you won’t forget.

Other Surf Experiences

Rosalie Daff (October 2017),

The resort was the most wonderful relaxing time in a perfect setting. Cannot fault the resort in any way.

Liz (May 2014)

Lomani Island Resort was great and the staff very friendly and accommodating, considering we had to switch rooms 3 times. The holiday was great. Seaplane was fantastic and worth every cent - the transfer from Nadi Airport to domestic to board seaplane was smooth.

Dean (June 2013)

Hi Marie,Fiji was epic!! Musket Cove is great, as quality as Lomani but Lomani is just one step better. The place was Heaven! So stoked with the deal you got us, having meals included was a great part of the package which saved us some money i reakon. I so reccomend Lomani to anyone the Staff and everything about it is awsome!! Got some ok waves the first 4 days then stayed an extra two nights to catch a big swell but needed to stay another day. Thems the breaks. Thank you so much from Robyn and myself.Deanps photo attached

Joe (January 2013)

This resort has the perfect combination of convenience and serenity. It is adult only (unlike the other resort on the island) which makes for a quiet and relaxing stay. All of the rooms are within 100m of the water. The service is fantastic but not overly aggressive as I've experienced at other high-end resorts. There are plenty of food options, though it would be easy to exhaust the menu with a stay longer than 5-6 days. Breakfast is included and can be delivered to your room without extra charge. There is an unlimited meal plan available for lunch, afternoon snacks, and dinner but this is only worthwhile if you eat big meals (including appetizers and desserts). The massage on the beach was very relaxing and fairly priced.
