Rubio Plantation Retreat is in the remote central northeastern coast of New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. From here you can search the remote coastline and offshore islands for an undiscovered wave.

Rubio Plantation Retreat is located 220 Km from Kavieng, which is about 3 hours drive down the scenic Buluminski Highway. Rubio Plantation starts from the beach and goes up into the mountains. It has many trails to explore and a cool beautiful stream that comes out of the ground at the base of a giant tree and runs for several hundred meters and then disappears again into the ground. It then resurfaces and then runs into the ocean along a white sandy beach.

Owned and operated by Shane and Annette Clark - Shane is originally from Hawaii and has been surfing all his life. He first surfed New Ireland in the mid eighties as a teenager. Annette is from New Ireland and also enjoys catching some waves.

At Rubio they limit the number of guests to15 so there is never a crowd. They also limit the number of surfers at the retreat to 10 and the number of visiting surfers to the central coast region is limited to 20 by the Central New Ireland Surf Management Plan.

Rubio has a good, consistent break right on the beach directly in front of the retreat. There are also many other good breaks in the local area. Surf spots range from mellow longboard waves (depending on swell size and direction) to fast and hollow reef passes. There is vast range of both rights and lefts open to the varying swell directions. There are boats and vehicles available to take you out to the many excellent breaks on the offshore islands or along the coast.

The Central New Ireland Surf Club in cooperation with the New Ireland Surf Alliance and the Surfing Association of Papua New Guinea has established the Central New Ireland Surf Management Plan to benefit both the incoming surf tourist and the traditional resource owners. The plan ensures the incoming surf tourist that there will only be a maximum of 20 international surfers at any time surfing within the managed area. The plan ensures the traditional resource owners that there are real benefits from tourism flowing into their communities. The plan also ensures that surf tourism is sustainable in the region.

SAPNG-300x287

The Central New Ireland Surf Management Plan is one of four surf management plans in New Ireland Province. It covers the central north-east coast and some of the east coast islands. The fees that are generated through the plan are distributed to the communities to be used for community projects and some of the ongoing needs of the communities such as school supplies and aid post supplies. A portion of the fees are also used to help develop surfing as a sport at the village level. This sustainable style of managing the surf resource benefits all involved.

The Perfect Wave is an official and preferred member of Surfing Association in Papua New Guinea. We pay yearly membership fees and respect the surf management plans that are in place to keep the waves uncrowded - and these fees go directly to the local people whom waves we get to surf, ensuring the local schools get well-needed funds.

Eco Friendly and Sustainable Activities

The resort's buildings are built using sustainably harvested wood the they cut themselves.

Rubio use spring water and rain water for all their needs. Both water systems are all gravity feed, so require no power. The resort is run on solar and micro hydro power. Their waste water is run through a grey water system that waters their gardens. The septic is set up so it waters and fertilises part of the plantation.

Rubio buy the majority of our fruits and vegetables from the local villages where they are grown organically. They grow their coconuts and cocoa organically. The plantation is intercropped so that it does not require fertilisers and so that wildlife thrives in it. The back third of the property is untouched bush around the spring to ensure a good water source and wildlife habitat. The reef in front of the property has been set aside as a preserve.

Accommodation

Rubio's accommodation consists of 6 separate bungalows. All bungalows are made from native materials and are located along the beachfront. Each bed is fitted with a mosquito net.

There is 1 standard and 2 deluxe bungalows which are twin share while the 2 family bungalows consists of 2 separate bedrooms each. The master bedroom has a queen size bed with the other bedroom is twin share. Extra beds can be fitted in a room if needed.

There are flush toilets and showers in the deluxe and family bungalows with the standard bungalows sharing a separate central amenities block. Solar panels and hydroelectric provide power for the retreat.

Internet/Phone access

There are 2 mobile networks in the area. Neither have good coverage at Rubio, but both have some coverage in the area. You can usually get some coverage at most of the other breaks you'll surf on the Digicel network, and some of the other breaks on the Bmobile / Vodafone / Telikom network.

If you have a phone that picks up signal easily, both networks work from the deck at Rubio. Digicel has more towers, but they're only 2G or 3G. Bmobile / Vodafone / Telikom is 4G. You can get SIM cards at the airport in Port Moresby.

Surf & Other Activities

They have several vehicles and boats to cater to all their guest needs.

These include:

  • 23ft aluminum half cabin diesel powered jet boat.
  • 24ft centre console fiberglass boat powered by a 75hp outboard.
  • 16ft aluminum dingy powered by a 40hp outboard.

  • Canoeing - explore the rugged cliffs along the coast, viewing spinner dolphins, flying foxes, and blowholes in our traditional outrigger canoes.

Great trip! Quality 1-3 foot. Surfed 3 breaks per day, 8 hours a day, plenty of barrels. Shane was exceptional, couldn't fault the trip. Shane is an amazing guy, high surf intelligence, wise and all round nice guy. Literally hundreds of breaks in the area, with no one surfing. Beautiful location and the locals are even more impressive.

Will be back again for sure.

Michael (February 2017)

The Perfect Wave were terrific in the pre-planning stage of our trip and provided all the specific information we needed. All requests for additional information were promptly provided, and were accurate in the detail. All aspects of the trip were efficiently organised and delivered, making it an easy trip for us. Will certainly recommend The Perfect Wave to anyone interested in an overseas surfing trip. Well done.

Chris (January 2017)
A very special lifetime experience of great waves, no crowds (only max 4 to a peak) and good variety surfing levels were covered which enabled a surfing trip with my son.

Shane and his team made the trip feel like we were part of the family.

Nicholas (December 2016)

I cannot compliment you and TPW too highly.

It was simple smooth and excellent service from start to finish. You were proactive and very clear in your communication and planning.

The resort itself is charmingly rustic but it suits the location. Shane is a great host and the surf is plentiful. With 100km of coast and 8 surfers its unlike anywhere else.

I had an absolute ball and will
Most likely be a regular for this trip.

Some tips for the improvement of Rubio:

Some snorkelling gear would be useful for the flat days.

The Perfect Wave provided perfect service, sending us to the perfect location for our needs.

This has been our third trip to Rubio and every visit has been unique.
The surf, the location, the local people and their culture never cease to impress us. Looking forward to the next one.

Grame (February 2016)
Rubio Surf Resort is amazing - great waves, clean accommodation and fantastic food (& beer). Shane (host) and his staff are super relaxed and very accommodating. We explored up and down the New Ireland coast, met lots of local villagers and surfed some amazing breaks (with no crowds!). Can't wait to go back!

Rubio is super awesome, great being on a plantation, with waves literally at your door step! Shane is an absolute surf guru and a top notch guide!Perfect Wave delivered perfect waves! What more could you ask for!! I had a great time. We got the biggest swell when we got there so it was straight into it! There were some pretty solid waves thats for sure and in a unique environment. Shane was great , looked after us big time, the group weren't big wave hell men and he sorted us out each day with the best possible waves and never tired of driving us either! The food was excellent, the rooms were super lush right on the waters edge, and really good facilities!I went by myself not knowing anyone, but the other guys I met were super cool and we all got on really well and had heaps of good laughs hanging out in beautiful warm water with lush green hills as the back drop! The only bummer was having to leave as was getting a good feel for the reefs and just wanted to surf more and more!!!!

My second trip with the Perfect Wave and certainly not my last. No problems or issues with the whole trip. When things did go wrong due to flight delays & cancellations the Perfect Wave swung into action & were able to help us out immediately. When considering a surf holiday I would strongly suggest you consult with the staff at the Perfect Wave first.

(5) of us travelled to Rubio PNG 9/12/13 -20/12/13. (2) guys had been before and although there last trip lacked wave size they indicated the Perfect Wave and Shane the operator of Rubio rated very high.I also travelled to Banyak this year and had a very bad experience with an operator who basically had no idea. Hence I was very apprehensive about another land base operation.Fortunately any fears were dispelled from the time we started our booking with Rhonda and on my arrival at Rubio. It does help when the waves are perfect , with no crowds. However the following items also go along way to a successful surf trip.- The operation was very clean- Friendly staff- Good variety of meals (3 hot per day)- Shane had a great knowledge of the swell forecasts ,frequency and the location where the waves would be best each day. He also was more than willing to drive us to other locations if he thought it would be an improvement over the closer breaks. Fuel is quite expensive in PNG and found he was willing to go that bit further despite the costs- Accommodation was clean and comfortable, although small fans in the room would help with the heat. Despite the heat we slept well after being in the water for 5-6hrs each day.- Water was clean- PNG surf guide Akun and driver Kiakman were very helpfulPNG is a cultural experience and found the local people in the villages, along the road and at the surf breaks very friendly and had an obvious high regard for Shane and his family.I would have no hesitation recommending Perfect Wave in the future and Rubio for surfers who want no crowds, great waves and embrace the cultural experience.Thank you to Rhonda and the staff at perfect wave.

My trip to PNGs RUBIO plantation resort was a blast. Just getting there was interesting, sharing a packed 737 with heaps of Papuan mine workers heading home from a trip to Sydney made for an interesting journey northward. Transiting through Port Morsby and getting our domestic flight to Kaviang was fairly tight, being about the last to get on board. MAN IT WAS HOT on that plane waiting for the safety drill to end so we could get airborne and up to a cooler level, this climatic sledge hammer was our welcome to New Guinea and remained daily. Arriving at Kaviang we were met by Shane our host and one of his local crew ,boards and bags quickly stowed we were inbound for Rubio. The 3hr road trip down New Ireland was amazing .On arrival we were met by Shane`s parents Coleen and Larry whom bought Rubio years ago. Our first meal that evening was just divine as we had been travelling all day and were famished. With the food out of the way it was down to business, Shane rolled out several charts of New Ireland and briefed us of our exact location and the typical swell direction, size and forecast conditions we could expect, the scene was set-game on. That first nights sleep was challenging ,the HEAT, the pounding surf, the rain. Our first surf was at the brake outside Rubio next morning with several crew members hitting it real early! It was a hoot to get amounst it with the boys, smallish but heaps a fun. The next 10days were spent between surfing at home base and a neat right hand reef set-up several k`s nth called BooLoo. The average surf for our trip was in the 3-5ft. range with the last day easy 6ft+The fishing was good as well ,,just being out there and looking back at such a pristine view of basically nothing, no buildings, no signs that people even live there, just nature. Its hard to put in words how beautiful the coastal panorama is each new bay out doing the last. All the locals we met were really friendly and so inquisitive about where you`re from. I really enjoyed myself and would happily go back to Rubio, the food alone was a credit to Coleen and the bungalows perfect for a surfers needs,Shane was a great host and guide even if he did insist on procuring the primo bombs!!

Shane and his folks Larry and Colleen were great. Staff friendly food awesome!! SP Beer cold! Would do anything for us. The Perfect Wave was great to deal with. No mozzie bites.

The PNG trip we did was awesome and going to both Rubio and Nusa was a pretty good mix. Didn’t get any big waves but surfed every day and max 6 people in the water, but usually 2-3. Michelle had an awesome time too, relaxing, fishing and diving.

Hi, Rhonda I was with the group of 10 that went to Rubio (PNG) 11 - 23 Feb 2012. We were all blown away by the experience. Although the waves weren't epic, we were able to get quality waves everyday. In fact our bodies gave out before the waves did... Shane, Annette and their staff were excellent. Always willing to take us anywhere/anytime to find the Perfect wave. Shane's knowledge of the whole area and what swell/wind works where is amazing. However, the most satisfying aspect for me, was knowing we were the only surfers there. I have attached a couple of photos! Thanks again for organising our trip, I look forward to the next one. RegardsDale

Hi Rhonda Just wanted you to know that the trip went really well and all the guys were so impressed with the venue and the hosts.Shane was exceptional with his knowledge of the place, his eagerness to take us anywhere/anytime and the respect he generates in the area. The kids adore him.The experience was more than just the waves and most guys were blown away with the culture and the fact we were the only surfers on the whole island. On behalf of all the guys that went, thanks again for organising everything.

Hey Rhonda!Just wanted to say hi and thanks again for all your help setting me up with Rubio. I had a ball even though the surf wasn’t epic we surfed everyday and even got to surf 4 spots that had never been surfed before. Shane is a really great host and his wife Annette and her staff in the kitchen more than looked after our needs when it came to food, simple but delicious! And the home baked breads were amazing! Local people were so friendly, and it really made the experience so much more fulfilling. Its only early days for Rubio but I can see that it is going to be as popular as Nusa island in the not to distant future. I spoke to guys that stayed at Nusa on my way home, and it sounded like we definitely got the best of the surf at Rubio and the surrounding areas. Thanks RhondaLook forward to booking my next trip through you.
