There’s a fun, mechanical right-hander nearby, and four other main breaks can be regularly accessed aboard guided trips. Perfect for couples or families looking for the real, paradise island escape, you can expect a visit to Maalifushi to be one you never forget.

From the window of your Sea Plane transfer, you stare in wonder at the small string of islands that begin to take shape among the impossibly clear shades of blue below. Nestled among arguably one of the most beautiful, and unspoiled parts of the Maldives, the Maalifushi Resort by COMO is a rare jewel in the untouched southern reaches of the archipelago.

Since opening in 2014, it has become the first luxury resort in the Thaa Atoll, 220kms southwest of the capital Malé.

From the moment you lock eyes with this stunning location, the love-affair with the resort and its surroundings begins.

Just a short speed boat ride from a handful of often uncrowded and beautiful reef breaks, it’s a literal paradise-in-waiting for surfers searching for the utmost in luxury surf escape.

The scenery is beyond beautiful, with the lush tropical island surrounded by a stunning blue lagoon and the incredible Indian Ocean.

Diving and snorkeling is spectacular, whether you choose to hop in the water from within a few feet of your overwater or beach bungalow or take a guided trip.

Manta-rays, hammerheads and whale sharks are seasonal visitors of the Thaa Atoll, while the abundant fish and marine life make even surfing or swimming in these parts feel like a trip to the aquarium.

Explore the island on your very own cruiser-style bicycle, enjoy complimentary yoga and meditation in a world-class facility, and watch the sun fall behind the sea as you dine at the resort’s signature Japanese Restaurant.

Treat yourself to the highest quality treatments at the Shambhala Spa, another display of the resort’s commitment to holistic wellness.

Maalifushi prides itself on offering a flexible dining experience to suit a variety of expectant and discerning palates, making meal-times another experience in their own right.

The resort’s chefs rely on fresh, locally sourced seafood, as well as organic produce for healthy all-day dining options at the Madi, Thila and Shambhala menus.

Drawing inspiration from indigenous architecture, and built from locally sourced materials, the resort’s overall design is a stunning pairing of minimalist elegance with rustic chic.

Floating above a shallow lagoon, stand 33 white-painted overwater villas and suites, each with its own private terrace for slipping into the sea.

The resort’s land-based accommodations are no less impressive, however surrounded by lush views of the island’s tropical heart, or the Indian Ocean.

With plenty of options to suit your stay, the resort offers garden rooms, villas, suites, beach houses or more extravagant overwater options, like the stunning COMO Residence or two-bedroom COMO Villas with its own butler and private pool.

All rooms come with stunning, and spacious bathrooms adorned with a range of the COMO brand’s renowned pampering products. They also have the benefits of WiFi access, air-conditioning and antique colonial fans; Nespresso coffee and tea making facilities and LED TVs, DVD players and international direct dial telephones.

Surf & Other Activities

As the only resort in the far southern reaches of the Maldives, Maalifushi gives you unique resort-access to a handful of waves once only surfed by those willing to make the long journey by safari boat.

Crowds can be minimal to non-existent because of the remoteness of this untouched spectrum of the islands, while the waves remain consistent between the monsoon season of April to October.

Farms, a super fun right-hander more often better suited to a fish, long boarder or finless is just 25 minutes away.

While TropicSurf, the registered Surf provider on the island, offer guided trips to a handful of other breaks in the area, with the opportunity to surf everything from hollow barrels to long walls.

Like any where in the Maldives, you can score some of the most magical waves of your life on the right swell, with the beauty of your surroundings adding to a once in a lifetime experience in the water.

Tropic Surf also provide learn to surf options for complete beginners, and special surf coaching packages for intermediate surfers looking to improve.

Other Surf Experiences

John, August 2015

“Large rooms, excellent facilities, friendly staff and clearly a great deal of money and time invested in making this a paradise. Seaplane transfers are an adventure (apparently motion sickness for some, and we were allocated a 5.45am check-in). Bicycles are fun and almost standard issue (make sure you request in advance as essential). Kids club fully kitted out, along with modern boats for diving, surfing, fishing, cruising and transit...”

Xavier, August 2015

“We've been with my wife in this amazing hotel. Water villas are new, spacious and comfortable, food is excellent in the three restaurants and the activities are enough to guarantee entertainment of everyone...”

Olean, September 2015

“Without doubt one of the best hotel experiences I have ever had. Everything was simply perfect. We stayed in a beachside bungalow and we knew as soon as we arrived onto the small island that this was going to be a magical experience...”
