Summary

The Akakura hot springs are renowned throughout Japan, and there's few better places to experience them than the Akakura Hotel. Just a short walk from the hot spring area, the Akakura Hotel has been a local landmark for generations. Not to be confused with the nearby Akakura Park Hotel (which is likewise a great option), Akakura Hotel offers an unparalleled array of on site hot springs, plus classic décor and a lovely atmosphere. Internet access is available on site, though the real draw card here is the on site hot springs. Shuttle services are also available for bus and train terminal transfers.

The Akakura Hotel is a great choice for anyone looking to stay a few nights in Japan's resort village of Myoko. The Akakura is located right in the heart of the action, with plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, and just a short walk to the Akakura Onsen Ski Area. The Akakura area is one of Japan’s most famous locations for onsen (hot springs) towns in Japan, and also has some good skiing in winter. The hotel itself has a collection of hot springs on site, varying from large pools to secluded baths.

Akakura Onsen is said to have been discovered by a famous Buddhist priest known as Shinran who when climbing Mt. Myoko came upon wild animals bathing in the hot springs and then informed the local people.

Akakura Hotel features a variety of spacious western, Japanese and combination style Rooms. For the duration of your stay you may experience a Japanese Style Room, equipped with traditional Japanese style beds (futons), tatami floor mats, Japanese furniture and paper doors. You may also choose to stay in a western style room, featuring a Western style bed and furniture. The hotel likewise offers both Japanese and western style meals. They also offer a range of other services such as pick up from the train station.

Surf & Other Activities

Akakura's biggest draw card is its hot springs, known as onsen. The Akakura Hotel has several natural hot springs (onsen) to choose from, including a large main onsen, outdoor onsens, indoor baths and even private onsens that can be reserved for families or private use. Akakura Hotel also features a fully outdoor bath that is open only in the winter when the surrounding snow builds up for privacy. All of their onsen use natural hot spring water brought from the north side of Mt. Myoko. The water is rich in minerals, and locals say it has healing properties. Among the minerals, many of the onsens contain sulphur, so expect a bit of a smell.

Akakura's full list of hot springs includes:

Uenn-no Yu

This is one of the largest onsens in Akakura Onsen area.

Both baths for male and female feature spacious indoor baths with both jacuzzi and sauna and an outdoor bath which looks splendid in winter with when the snow has piled up.

Rakuraku-no Yu

This hotspring has three indoor bathtubs sourced from hot springs at three different temperatures.

Open 24 hours.

Ishiwari-no Yu

This is the smallest onsen in the Akakura Hotel.

The bathtub is made of stones, which supposedly helps keep both the onsen and your body very warm after leaving the bath.

Open 24 hours.

Tenkuu-no Yu

This is an outside onsen for mixed bathing - open to both males and females.

This is limited opportunity only available during winter when the snow has piled up around the bath to create privacy.

Operating Hours: 5am to Midnight

Private Bath (Myoko-no Yu & Koban-no Yu)

If you would like to book a private bath, the hotel has two small private baths available between 5am and midnight.

Along with hot springs, Myoko is well known for its winter sports. The Akakura Onsen Ski Area is just a three-minute walk from the hotel. Most other Myoko ski areas can be reached by free shuttle buses.
