The Akakura Hotel Annex is a great option for anyone looking for good value accommodation in Japan's skiing village of Myoko. Guests can use all the facilities of the Akakura Hotel next door, but with a significantly lower price tag for their room. It’s not a bad choice if you’re not fussed about glitz and glamour, though it’s not for everyone. If you want complete luxury, look elsewhere. However, if you’re happy with a decent sized, clean room, you’ll enjoy the Akakura annex. Of course, that’s not to say they have no luxuries. As you’d expect from a hotel in Myoko, the Akakura has a great on site hot spring. It’s a bit of a God send on cold winter days. They also have a pretty decent location, and good transport connections.
The Akakura Hotel Annex is an extension of the Akakura Hotel. The Annex is joined to the Akakura Hotel by a long hall, though the Annex offers more economically priced rooms. Despite paying less than hotel guests, Annex visitors still have all the facilities available from the hotel proper. Some of the hotel's services include pick up from the train station, plus some fantastic on site hot springs. Known locally as onsen, these hot springs are a great way to kick back after a day on the slopes. Akakura Hotel's hot springs are some of the best in town, and really worth checking out. The hotel also offers breakfast daily, and can provide plenty of information on the surrounding area, including how to easily access all of Myoko's ski slopes. Getting access to these services for the price of an Annex room is a pretty good deal, and an option well worth considering for any economically minded traveler in Myoko.
On top of this, the Annex has a great location, with plenty of Myoko's best restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. It's only a four minute walk to the Akakura Onsen ski lifts. All up, this is a clean, comfortable and spacious hotel in a convenient location.
Akakura Hotel Annex has two kinds of twin bedrooms. The first is a standard 19 meter western style room. The second is 25 meter special twin room, featuring Western style beds, and a Japanese tatami room. This combination style room is a great way to experience a traditional Japanese room, but with western style beds for comfort. Tatami are traditional woven straw mats common in Japanese households, and used while taking tea. It's a great addition that allows visitors to relax, and enjoy a tranquil moment during their holiday.
However, the biggest draw card here is the variety of hot springs available over at the hotel proper. Guests of the Annex are welcome to use the hotel's hot springs, which are among the best in the area. All of their onsen use natural hot spring water brought from the north side of Mt. Myoko. The water is rich in minerals, and locals say it has healing properties. Among the minerals, many of the onsens contain sulfur, so expect a bit of a smell. Akakura Hotel also features a fully outdoor bath that is open only in the winter when the surrounding snow builds up for privacy.
Surf & Other Activities
Akakura is mostly known for its fantastic skiing opportunities. The Akakura Onsen Ski Area is just a four minute walk from the hotel, and has a solid variety of slopes suitable for winter sportspeople of all skill levels. Most other Myoko ski areas can be reached by free shuttle buses that departs from near the hotel. The area also has a long history of hot spring tourism, dating back to medieval times. Today, thousands of visitors come to Myoko to experience its unique hot springs, which locals say can alleviate all kinds of health issues. More importantly, they're just lovely to relax in after a day of skiing.
In summer, Myoko also offers some good hiking and cycling options, with numerous trails throughout the countryside. This time of year shows a side of Myoko totally different to its skiing season, and is an experience well worth hanging around for. All up, there's plenty to do in Myoko all year round!
