As its name suggests, the Akakura Central Hotel is located in central Akakura, one of Japan's most visited skiing villages. The location is not only close to restaurants and transport connections, it's also right on the edge of the skiing area, and is totally ski in, ski out. Both western and Japanese style rooms are available, plus a range of services including an on site restaurant that cooks up some decent Japanese fare. You can also expect free wifi, plus cable TV, free parking and other services you’d expect from a medium range hotel. Best of all, they also offer an on site hot spring, which is a real treat on winter nights.
Located right on the edge of the ski slopes, Akakura Central Hotel is a great choice for a stay in Myoko, no matter what season. It has a very convenient location in the middle of the village, within walking distance of public transport, restaurants and bars, and of course, the ski slopes.
Myoko's amazing snow has gained it international recognition in recent years, but within Japan the town has long been known as a great travel destination, for its abundant onsen (hot springs), delicious cuisine, its friendly people and the genuine Japanese experience it can provide. The Central has been a local landmark for more than half a century to serve travelers from Japan and abroad.
With 51 rooms in both Japanese and western styles, the hotel is well equipped for groups big and small. They offer some great packages including rooms and meals, and can provide plenty of information on the local area. Myoko itself has plenty to offer the traveler, with the ski slopes being the star of the show. The region has some of the country's best skiing, with the nearby Mount Myoko taunting visitors from the minute they arrive.
The Central's 51 rooms provide a variety of choices for the traveler. The offer both Japanese and western rooms, along with hybrid rooms. In this third option, it's possible to relax on the fragrant tatami (traditional woven straw) mats during the day, then enjoy the familiar comfort of a full-size bed at night.
All rooms can come with meals included. The hotel chef can prepare both Japanese and western dishes, made with locally sourced ingredients.
Room amenities include:
All rooms are equipped with satellite/pay-per-view TV, telephone, refrigerator, toiletries, yukata cotton robe.
Banquet rooms, kiosk, coffee shop, coin laundry, ski and snowboard rental, karaoke machine, game area, parcel delivery service, parking.
One of Central's biggest draw cards is its great location. The hotel is located right on the ski area (Route 39 is actually a ski slope down to the Central during the winter). Public transportation is convenient and affordable. However, bear in mind private vehicles must have snow tires and be 4WD (chains are often not sufficient); the slope in front of the hotel, as well as Akakura's main street, can be very slippery, particularly after snowplows have cleared the snow. Parking is also limited.
Myoko can be easily accessed from all of Japan's major international gateways. Most international travelers will come through Nagano Station, either on the Nagano Shinkansen on the way from Tokyo, or via Nagoya from that city's Chubu Airport, or Osaka (Kansai Airport). See the Myoko Tourist Office's access information for more details.

Surf & Other Activities
Most visitors head to Myoko to take advantage of the great skiing in winter. Long seasons and serious snowfall make Myoko a winter sportsperson's dream. When the snow melts in the summer months, the countryside becomes well suited to hiking and other outdoor activities.
Another big deal around Myoko are hot springs, known in Japan as onsen. The Akakura Central Hotel's on site onsen uses completely natural water from a source high on Mount Myoko. The water is regarded by locals as having healing qualities for conditions such as neuralgia, muscle and joint pain and skin ailments.
And best of all, the onsen are open 24 hours a day – any time you need a soothing, warming break.
Some hints for getting the most out of the onsen experience:
- Drink a glass of cold water both before and after you take a bath.
- Wash and rinse thoroughly outside the bath before entering.
- To avoid feeling dizzy (because the water is hot), fold a wet towel and put it on your head. Never put the towel in the bath!
- Enter the bath for several short dips, rather than one long soak.
- A good treatment for a tired body is alternate hot and cold soakings for the legs.
