Surf & Other Activities
A great right-hander breaking over reef can be found just below the Number ONE Mirrisa. The location of the point between the rocks and a hill means its waves are hardly affected by onshore winds. It's a fun wave that holds up to about 5 foot. Mirissa also has a beach break ideal for beginners and boogy boarders. It's less crowded than Hikkaduw and it has a mellow atmosphere in a tropical location. Surfboard hire, lessons with great teachers and complete surfing tours can be organised from Number One Mirissa.

They will also organise trips to the nearby Yala National Park, and Sinharaja primary rainforest, but there’s also plenty of wildlife closer to home. Wild peacocks proliferate the area, turtles come to lay their eggs on the beach at night and richly coloured birds sing the type of songs that remind you you’re in a tropical paradise.

Whale and dolphin watching tours
Mirissa is one of the world’s hotspot for whale and dolphin watching and pods numbering in their hundreds have often been recorded Species include Blue whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales and the occasional Killer whales too. Dolphin types include Bottlenose, Spinner, Risso’s and Striped. Turtles, Bluefin tuna and flying fish are also regularly seen.

Sightings occur a few miles off Mirissa and the best time to see these glorious animals is early in the morning. Stay here and you can avoid the 5am rise everyone else has to suffer!

Snorkle off the local reef and you’ll find an amazing array of fish including lobster, squid and a huge variety of smaller species. Don’t have a snorkle? Don’t worry, you can hire one.

Yala National Park is the second largest national park in Sri Lanka – and the most visited. Elephants, leopards and water buffalo abound and their bespoke tours will help you see many of the other 215 bird species, 44 types of mammal and 46 types of reptile in the park.

Other Surf Experiences

Angus (December 2016)
Number One Hotel in Mirissa was also a delight. For the first few days it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. The location is brilliant it is situated just above the main break, my wife used to have to me from her lounger as I passed by just a few feet below her. Breakfast was fantastic you could have all kinds of stuff, tea and coffee, fresh fruit juice, fresh fruit platter, muesli and yoghurt, French toast, normal toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, traditional Sri Lankan breakfast or all of the above. The hotel is right next to all the beach bars and restaurants so if you don't want to eat in the hotel there is plenty of choice a minutes walk away. I would recommend you eat in the hotel at least once as we had the best curry of our stay in the hotel. The point break below the hotel worked everyday I was there, it's not very powerful or challenging but I caught some great fun waves.
