The East Coast

The East Coast surf experience is centered around Arugam Bay’s long, sand point breaks. Conditions through May to October offer relatively mellow but consistent waves.

The same swells that turn Indonesia on, deliver the goods to Sri Lanka, although obviously the higher latitude causes considerable swell decay.

Arugam Bay has played host to several surfing contest over the years, such as the World Qualifying Series and Men’s World Longboard Championship. Even though East Coast Sri Lanka has continued to rise in popularity, its remoteness significantly reduces the crowds.

The South West Coast

November to April brings morning offshore winds to the western side of Sri Lanka.

Main Reef is the perfect beginner surf break. There’s a great left-hander just 2 minutes north of the Coral Sands Hotel which is also well worth a surf on the right swell.

Water activities rule the roost here, and there are a number of PADI Dive Schools in Hikkaduwa, ready to guide you around some great shipwrecks and reef dives.

The South Coast of Sri Lanka, from Unawatuna Bay to Matara, is one of very best places in the world to see Blue Whales and Sperm Whales. The best time to see them is in April whilst they are migrating.

 

 

The entire South West Coast of Sri Lanka, including Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna Bay, Weligama and Matara, is very laid-back and fun with its bars, cafe and hotels along a beautiful stretch of beach that look out on the surf.
