In my 30 plus years as a surf scribe for various Australian surf magazines and websites, I would have to say the winter of 2018 on the East Coast of Australia ranks in the worst 5 that i have ever witnessed.

Hey, its not all bad, the weather has been the warmest ever, the water quite warm until recent weeks, wind offshore nearly every day, and the banks on the beaches when there has been some swell have been fun.

However, there has only been three East Coast lows of any substance, which goes a long way to explaining the current drought in NSW and QLD, and one of them was way back in mid January.

In complete contrast the Indian Ocean has been awash with swell. Western Australia and even more so the Indonesian archipelago and The Maldives have enjoyed a season to remember, and it is a long way from over yet!

July has been proclaimed the best ever by so many Indo watermen it is impossible to argue the toss. Big Wednesday July 25, 2019 will go down in surfing history. I’m sure you have all seen images and clips from 20ft plus Outside Corner Uluwata, 15ft plus Nias, Bawa looking like Jaws …. the list goes on.

Some of the best surf content ever seen has been flooding all of the leading global surf forecasting sites and social media platforms and to be honest it is fuelling a massive case of FOMO amongst us all!

The majority of us mere mortals will never be fit or proficient enough to tow into massive Outside Corner Ulu’s, or Bawa, however we all can relate to trips like The Perfect Wave’s recent July Oasis charter when the crew led by Anthony Walsh and East Coast grommetts Jay Brown and Darcy De Clouett scored 10 days of 4-8ft Mentawai perfection.

These are the trips we can all relate to and want to be on!

I’ve just checked my local for the umpteenth time today to see clean, sunny 6 inch lines lapping the shore, then i jumped online and my social feed is again awash with images of HT’s, Telescopes, The Banyaks, The Telos, Cokes in the Maldives, Lohis and Kandooma.

I totally feel like i’m missing out right now. Yes I work for a surf travel company, and it is my job to promote surf trips, but right at this time in a long pretty lame winter i’m just another surfer that needs to go surfing!

FOMO.

I’m sure you can relate?
