Nicaragua is a naturally growing destination for surfers of all abilities from all around the world. Despite its growth in popularity, it is still untouched by tourists. The country offers plenty of tourist attractions, it is accessible and made easy due to the friendly nature of the locals who are always willing to help in any circumstance. It must qualify as one of the best surf destinations in the world…if you like the sound of it, think Miramar Surfcamp.

Miramar Surfcamp is one of the most treasured surf locations in Central America. Located in the North of Nicaragua, it offers more than just the average wave, you will find the perfect wave. Blessed with off shore winds, point and beach breaks, it provides waves for all levels of surfer, all year round. During the season from March to October, peaking swells produce perfect barrels for the more experienced surfer, easily accessed on foot or by boat. It is also an ideal place for those wishing to learn to surf, with a gentle wave at your doorstep. Board hire and surfing lessons are offered from seasoned surfers, so be rest assured if you are wishing to learn, you will leave having caught the surfing bug and a few waves.

The Miramar Surfcamp is fortunate enough to accommodate all levels of the surfing community, so whatever you level you’ll find your perfect wave. Throughout the year on average the waves range between 3-8ft. There is no need for a wetsuit; it is boardshorts and bikinis in this uncrowded haven. During the peak surf season, expect waves at 12ft off the point directly out the front of the camp and there is always an array of waves for the beginners’ on the beach break. Whilst less than a five-minute boat ride to Puerto Sandino, experienced surfers can carve 15ft+, 100-meter long waves.

Miramar Surfcamp consists of two large complexes, with 13 rooms located right in front of the Punta Miramar with angelic scenery of the ocean from most parts of the camp. Rooms and dorms are clean with beachfronts, all catering for all types of traveling surfer. There is a large open communal area to chill-out with fellow guests, with great views of the surf and amazing sunsets. There is an open and breezy hammock lounging area to quietly relax, it is located on top of a training area used for surf training, yoga, meditating and Jiu-Jitsu or any other kind of personal training you wish you indulge in.

This alluring destination has more to offer other than just surfing, groups and individuals can visit surrounding locations to experience other waves and activities such as kayaking down the mangroves, motorcycling, paddle boarding, swimming holes and secluded beaches. Tours to the city of Leon where you can experience its revolutionary history and culture; including the largest cathedral in Central America.

The greatest and most memorable part of the experience is the culture and vitality that exists here. The owners Rafael Sampaio Sterza, Leandro Vargas Zouain and Fernando Paiva and their staff are warm and friendly giving a family feeling to the place. They offer drivers for pick-ups and drop-offs, experienced chefs, photographer and film- maker.
