It’s getting harder to do, but the boys all managed to get their leave passes locked in for our biennial Ments trip and with more kids between us these days the froth levels have never been higher to get away. As usual, we did a couple of nights in Bali on the way over to have a few settlers, both in the water and at the bar. Then the mission over to Padang for the fabled crossing to the islands.

We had decided on Switchfoot for this trip, so we could keep the number down to 8 guys. This gave us less of a scramble to fill spots, less people in the water and plenty of waves to ourselves.

It was an awesome way to go!

Switchfoot is a bit smaller than some of the other options out there, but with the extra width of a cat and the well thought out set-up, it never felt crowded; even when a mate jumped on last minute and we ended up with 9.

Captain Quinny is the biggest frother on the boat!

And this guaranteed us getting a multitude of waves. Of our 11 days in the water we were surfing before sunrise on 9 of those days and after sunset on almost as many. We managed to get to 18 different waves on the trip with plenty of crisscrossing different areas to make the most of wind changes or to escape other boats. We had great sessions at Lances Left, Roxy’s, Lighthouse, The Hole, but the best session was a semi-secret wave that can’t be named with big long lefts and square barrels on the end section.

By the end we were 9 knackered, burnt, cut (for some) and stoked customers, already talking about when we’re going to be able to do it again.

We’ll start the ground work on our biennial leave passes now!
