One of the most common questions we’re asked here at The Perfect Wave is: “What kind of surfboard should I bring on my trip?”

It seems like an easy question to answer:

Going to the North Shore of Oahu? Bring a big wave gun!
Going to the Mentawais or the South Pacific? Bring a step-up board for tube riding!
Going to surf Sri Lankan point breaks? Bring a fun fish!

However, it’s not always that easy. The Mentawais could be smaller for days at a time, and the Maldives can be double overhead for your entire stay, too. Not to mention French and Mexican beach breaks, which can go from fun-sized wedges to heaving overhead barrels in the space of a few hundred metres on the same stretch of sand.

Ideally, you’ll bring a board you’re comfortable surfing in a wide range of conditions. If you only have one surfboard, then the choice is already made. If you have two or more, you might want to leave your favourite board at home. No matter how good your board bag is (buy a good one), and no matter how well you pack your board (use bubble pack and foam pads for the nose and tail), there is still a good chance it will get dinged in transit or during a session on your trip.

If you’re a novice or intermediate level surfer, you may want to consider not traveling with a surfboard at all. You’ll save yourself time packing, money on excess baggage fees and a lot of hassle dragging your board bag through airports. In many places, with the money you save you can buy or rent a surfboard to use once you arrive at your destination.
