So far this season the swell has been small for the North facing breaks of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands & Pohnpei, however this is all about to change!

A major pulse of NE trade swell is building for next week and will result in an extended run of solid waves.

This swell should benefit all the PNG surf spots as well as West Papua, Halmahera and Pacific Indonesia. Micronesia and Western pacific will also score solid swell. Keep in mind this swell is around 12 seconds so is more like a strong trade swell than a long range ground swell.

Forecast for Vanimo Surf Lodge, PNG – pretty similar numbers for Kavieng and Rubio. Keep in mind that waves in PNG are often bigger than suggested in the forecast so expect double overhead plus at exposed breaks at peak of swell.

Forecast for P-Pass Surf Camp, Pohnpei. This swell is not a classic P-Pass swell which prefers North to NW ground swell. Winds will also be a bit weird in Pohnpei, SW is onshore at P-Pass – really unusual at this time of year.

You can see the source of this strong mid-period swell with this broad fetch of strong NE winds covering half the Western pacific.
