If you want to enjoy the beach parties and nightlife, stay in The Drifters which is a good, reasonably priced, family-run surf guesthouse with a restaurant downstairs and a swimming pool to wash the salt water off.  Just a few doors down is the famous Mambos where you can take surfing lessons or have some surf guiding and after a surf, join in the fun in the bar downstairs.

Spending a few nights in the SunBeach Hotel is highly recommended.  This surf resort  is close enough to the beach bars to walk to, but far enough away to get a good night’s sleep!  The Roman Beach Hotel is further down again and is perfect for couples who are looking for a more luxurious hotel to lay their heads.  The chef here is apparently the best in Hikkaduwa, enjoy fine wines and exquisite food at this beachfront hotel.

Another premium surf resort in the area is called the Aditya Resort which is just 5 kms from Hikkaduwa and a lovely place to spend your honeymoon.  The resort is set within serene gardens with a beautiful swimming pool overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Time doesn’t exist at the Aditya, you can dine when you want or take a dip in the private plunge pools which can be found in each of the suites.  Enjoy some spa treatment in the privacy of your own room or do some yoga in the peaceful gardens surrounding the resort.

From Hikkaduwa head towards Galle, The Fortress Resort is a stunning 5* surf resort with an excellent restaurant.  The rooms are spacious and the design is an elegant mixture of modern and colonial architecture.

Further around the coast towards Angahama is the Kabalana Resort which is more traditional and perfectly located near some of the best breaks on the south coast.  They have deluxe rooms as well as beach bungalows in this surf resort and it’s very reasonably priced.

Continue around the coast to Welligama.  The Green Rooms is the best place for learners as this surf resort is situated on a bay with a super mellow beach break – the restaurant serves good, fresh food and the BBQ evenings are as good as it gets!  Mirissa is the next place to visit!  It’s said to be the most beautiful beach on the south coast!  The Number One Mirissa is a boutique hotel perched on top of a cliff overlooking a great right-hander that peels along the rocks below.  There’s also beachbreak for all levels of surfing.  There are beach bars and restaurants dotted all along the bay so you can enjoy a few beers watching the sun go down.
