Jay Brown is a 17 year old supergrom from Cronulla. His old man Mark is also a great surfer with a fluid style and likeable demeanour. Jay’s favourite home breaks are the Alley Rip Bowl and Voodoo. His best contest result to date was taking out the National Rip Curl Gromsearch in 2016 and then coming 3rd in the International Gromsearch Final in Brazil. He is currently sitting in 11th position on the WSL JQS Australasia/Oceania rankings on track to realize his goal of making it into the World Juniors in 2019.

I sat down with Jay after he returned from the Mentawai onboard the Oasis with GoPro legend Anthony Walsh, Aussie Darcy De Clouett and Hawaiian Kalaokahaku Willard.

Ben – Was the Oasis Walshy trip your first to the Ments?

Jay – Yes it was my first visit to the Mentawai and it will certainly not be my last! Walshy, Pottsy and all the boys were such a great crew.

What did you think of the Mentawai?

I was mentally prepared for a pretty awesome surf trip and location, but was blown away by the consistency of waves, low crowds and the fact that there were so many options The Mentawai offers so much to a surfer, it was just heaven.

Where did you guys surf?

We surfed Greenbush, Lances Rights and Lefts, HT’s, Telescopes, Macaroni’s, Roxies and Thunders. Macca’s, Greenbush and HT’s were on fire 6-8ft pumping barrels.

How was the crew?

The crew were epic…everybody went so hard and surfed all day. We were calling each other into barrels and cheering everybody on. Pottsy got some great photos and Walshy is a legend with the Go Pro. At night we would watch the sunset and look over the footage from the days surfing madness…..some hilarious stories were told and tomorrows adventures planned.

What was your favourite wave?

Fav wave that’s a tough one… the waves are the best I have surfed anywhere in the world, but Greenbush was my favourite for sure. Being a goofy footer its hard to go past a pumping left barrel!

Did you learn much?

I learnt so much from legends like Walshy… he is the man with so much knowledge on filming and technique (barrel riding) I have so much respect for him!

What are your immediate plans with surfing?

I have just finished this years JQS with a 4th at the Hydralyte Pro Junior Cronulla, next stop is Uluwatu and Canguu with the family, and North Shore Hawaii for the Pipeline Masters in December. Cant wait!
