2014 will long be remembered as a standout season in The Mentawai (Celebrate Mentawai Night in our office – Nov 27) . Early season was a little inconsistent, but by mid May it was all systems go. The high season was all time. Seemingly endless back to back swells in June, July, August and September ensured crowds were manageable and holidaying surfers left frothing and psyched to save for a return trip.

Well respected Aloita resident and surf guide Cahn Mitchell rated 2014 as the best season he has enjoyed in a decade. “We were so lucky to score plenty of uncrowded perfection in June and July and plenty of back to back swells right through to mid September, even October was pretty good. Surfing waves like HT’s, Rifles and Telescopes as good as gets with no one else out was pretty special. And of course The Perfect Wave Occy trip was a real highlight.”

Cahn’s good friend, respected D’Bora surf guide – Adam Dube shared Cahn’s sentiments when he said, “2014 was a very good season by anyone’s standards. The high point for me was a very memorable run of back to back SW swells we had in late May, early June. Two trips in a row we scored really good Telescopes, HT’s and Roxies which are some of my favourites waves. “

TPW filmer and photographer Andy Potts remembers July and August fondly. Andy said, “July was the standout month for me in The Mentawai, with swell after swell ensuring it was the month with the best memories for me. July was also a good month for crowds. The consistency of swell increased options, and spread the boats. Generally speaking crowds were highly manageable outside of a few days here and there when traffic jam situations occurred in the Playgrounds region.

Pottsy continued, “August also delivered some of the best waves of the season, and there was a surprising lack of crew for whatever reason, something you don’t really question when you’re scoring epic Macaronis with only 3-4 of your best mates.”

No exaggeration pretty much every day in August delivered straight offshore 4-6ft, 16 second period lines of endless tubes coupled with rippable sections and glassy walls. Every day delivered perfect, groundhog day style sessions at nearly every reef break you could think of.”
